Aid workers resume activity in Boko Haram-hit town

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UN OCHA) has announced the resumption of humanitarian operations in Rann town, in Borno. The UN had on March 2 suspended aid operations and withdrew its workers from Rann after a March 1 attack by suspected Boko Haram terrorists, who killed eight persons, including three aid workers, and abducted a nurse.

The UN relief wing said the resumption of aid operations in the community followed several security assessments by the UN and non-governmental organisations. “The UN and partners are providing life-saving emergency assistance in Rann including food, shelter and medicine to over 80,000 women, children and men, among them 55,000 internally displaced people.” UN OCHA affirmed.

CAR: About 40 dead following fightings between ex-Séleka and Anti-balaka

BANGUI – The armed conflict between group ex-Seleka of the Unité pour la Paix en Centrafrique (UPC) and the groups Anti-Balaka in progress for Tuesday has caused until now the death of about 40 people according to the security sources.

Therefore the UPC reinforcements from Ippy and Maloum have massacred the civilians in many villages between Tagbara and Gotchele, 35 km from Bambari.

Anatole Ndémagouda-Gbagot, a congressman of Bambari, claimed “The whole population is in brushwoods without humanitarian assistance. Peacekeepers (Minusca) of Tagbara have protected only the mayor of the city”.

Spanish police rescue Nigerian girls sold for sex after voodoo threats

An unnamed popular Nigerian DJ has been arrested alongside 88 other persons for their alleged involvement in a major sex trafficking case in Spain. The bust, which is being referred to as one of the biggest in Europe regarding trafficking, was carried out with police from the UK and Nigeria. The report said the Nigerian crime ring was linked to the Eiye Confraternity – a network that Spanish police have previously compared to the mafioso in Chicago in the 1930s.

After being trafficked to Spain via Libya and Italy, the women and girls were kept in cave houses in the southeastern city of Almeria. They were then forced into prostitution to pay off “debts” of 30,000 euros ($36,900) each, which they were told they owed the organization for their journey to Europe. Europol said the DJ had helped transfer the victims to Spain and “organize sexual exploitation” in several provinces. It said bank accounts used by the network to launder more than 300,000 euros had been blocked.

Gabon announces its retreat from the mission of the UN in CAR

BANGUI – Gabon has announced, on Thursday 8 March, his intention to withdraw his 450 soldiers from the mission of the United Nations in Central African Republic, Minusca, according to what brought by a relationship of the Council of ministers. Gabon, that has 444 soldiers unfolded in the Minusca, has participated in the strengths U.N. in CAR since 2014.

24 killed, 20 others feared missing in fresh Benue attacks

OKPOKWU – Twenty-four residents were killed and 20 others feared missing after suspected herdsmen struck again in Benue State Monday afternoon. Residents of Omusu and two nearby communities in Okpokwu Local Government Area told tuesday night that the attackers entered their villages around 4:00 p.m. Monday and carried out a two-hour deadly assault. Emergency officials described the attacks as “very brutal” and said three villages were affected, with more than 2,000 displaced persons now desperate for relief materials.

“They killed people to their satisfaction before they left,” said Attah Alexander, a resident of Omosu community. “It was deliberate and there were no policemen around to stop them.” The attackers struck despite the presence of Nigerian troops in the ongoing peace-keeping exercise named ‘Ayem Akpatuma’ or ‘Cat Race’.

The head of the Egyptian General Intelligence Abbas Kamel received on Friday a delegation from the Hamas group led by Ismail Haniyeh. It included Khalil Al-Haya, Rouhy Moshtaha, and Fathi Hammad. They discussed with Egyptian officials about security and humanitarian conditions in Gaza in order to set a special timetable concerning the reconciliation agreement signed by the two main Palestinian factions Hamas and Fatah. The government could end gas price subsidies

Finance Minister Abderrahmane Raouia said on Saturday that the government could end gas price subsidies from 2019 and other subsidies from 2020.Mr. Raouia’s announcement was made in Dubai on the sidelines of the meeting between the Arab Finance Ministers and the International Monetary Fund (IMF). The minister did not specify which subsidies could be cut in 2020, simply recalling that the state subsidizes a wide variety of goods and services such as electricity, bread and oil. Abderrahmane Raouia justified the announcement by the fact that the state aims to eliminate its budget deficit in three to four years.
