President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi on Thursday attended a cultural seminar, held by the armed forces, discussing how “forces of evil” draw up strategies aimed at destroying the Egyptian state and inciting public opinion against it.During the session, political analyst Abdel Moneem Saeed elaborated on those evil powers’ plans, mainly pointing fingers at the Muslim Brotherhood group. “They have two strategies; the first one is using militant groups to terrorise people on the ground, while the second one is using media outlets to distort the image of the state,” he said. Saeed mentioned as an example when the New Suez Canal was pointed by the MB Group as unuseful and when they started defending the Red Sea islands of Tiran and Sanafir as Egyptian lands through more lies and the promotion of the idea that the state was involved in a corrupted deal”.

Egyptian Foreign Minister: “western media ignored terror attacks around the world”

On Tuesday, Egyptian Foreign Minister SamehShoukry praised the White House’s criticism of western media outlets’ alleged disregard to cover 78 terrorist assaults around the world, according to a statement issued by the ministry’s official spokespersonThe statement follows a release by the White House of a list of 78 terror attacks—dating back from September 2014 to December 2016—western media has allegedly ignored.“We praise the stance of US President Donald Trump regarding how western media ignored terror attacks around the world, as well as the White house’s list of 78 terror attacks western media has disregarded—including nine attacks in Egypt,”the statement of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ spokesperson read.Abou Zaid noted that the White House list and the criticism of Trump towards western media’s biased coverage is consistent with recurring calls from Egypt, stipulating the necessity of adopting a comprehensive strategy by the international community to fight terrorism.

Egypt will start receiving 1m barrels of petroleum each month from Iraq

An agreement signed between the Egyptian government and its Iraqi counterpart to supply Egypt with 1m barrels of Basrah Light crude oil per month with facilitated payment terms will come into effect within the next few days. The announcement was made by Habib Al-Sadr, the Iraqi ambassador to Egypt. The Egyptian Minister of Petroleum visited Baghdad in October, after Saudi Aramco halted the five-year agreement to import 700,000 tonnes of petroleum products a month to Egypt. The Saudi decision to halt shipments led a number of deputies from the National Iraqi Alliance to call on the Iraqi government to export crude oil to Egypt with facilitated payments.

Meeting between the President, Defense and Interior Ministers to discuss security issues in North Sinai

President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi held on Wednesday a meeting with Defense Minister Sedki Sobhi and Interior Minister Magdy Abdel Ghaffar, in addition to a number of leading officials in the army and Interior Ministry to discuss the security situation in North Sinai, according to presidency statement. The statement said that the meeting discussed the security situation all over Egypt, but focused more on the situation in North Sinai which recently witnessed two deadly attacks against security checkpoints in Al-Arish.

51 cases of corruption in state institutions reported in December

PFT released its monthly report on Sunday that documented 51 cases of corruption during the month of December 2016. The organisation ranks the Ministry of Supply at the top of the list of most corrupt entities in Egypt, with 10 recorded incidents in December. The PFT said in its report that there were fewer incidents of corruption in December compared to November. The PFT recorded 64 cases of corruption in November. Among the incidents monitored in December was a corruption case related to the State Council, in which three officials in the purchasing department were arrested in possession of large sums of money and gold that they received as bribes. The report referred to the State Council officials case as “one of the biggest corruption cases in Egypt.” The report concluded that the Cairo governorate faces the highest number of corruption cases, with 33% of the 51 cases occurring in the governorate.

Two separate attacks on two North Sinai checkpoints

The death toll of two separate attacks on two North Sinai checkpoints early on Monday has risen to nine people, with 21 others injured, Egypt’s state-owned MENA reported. According to security sources who spoke with MENA, eight policemen and one civilian were killed while 11 policemen and 10 civilians were injured in the attacks. The first attack took place at El-Matafe checkpoint in Al-Arish city and was executed by around 20 militants who tried to storm the checkpoint using rocket-propelled grenades (RPG), and an explosive rigged car, according to a statement issued by the Ministry of Interior on Monday afternoon. The Ministry said security forces were able to “fight off the terrorist attack,” killing five militants and injuring three others. The statement added that security forces were able to detonate an improvised explosive device planted by the militants. In a separate attack, the Interior Ministry said “another terrorist group” targeted El-Masaeed checkpoint on Egypt’s Ring Road, killing a police conscript during an exchange of fire with security forces.The security forces were currently conducting a combing operation in the vicinity of the area to arrest the culprits. No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attacks. The Egyptian army and police have been battling an entrenched Islamist insurgency for several years in North Sinai.

Egyptian and international political figure Mohamed ElBaradei appeared on an Arabic TV channel for the first time in three years on Saturday, saying he decided to speak out about political and economic issues in order to help at a time of crisis. ElBaradei, who resigned as Vice President of the Republic in August 2013 and subsequently left the country, said that even though he had never stopped being part of the public sphere in Egypt. The former politician said he believes this help is much needed in a time when the whole Arab world is heading towards “self-destruction.” However, he did not announce clearly if he is planning to play a direct role in the Egyptian political scene in the coming days. He said during the show that he had taken a step back from politics after 16 years, including 12 years heading the International Atomic Energy Agency in Geneva between 1997 and 2009. ElBaradei, a former diplomat who became a prominent figure in Egypt in 2010 when he returned to Egypt from Geneva and spoke out publicly against then-president Hosni Mubarak, was appointed Vice President in July 2013 after the ouster of Mohamed Morsi. He resigned a month later, after the dispersal of the pro-Morsi Rabaa protest camp.

9 IS “Sinai Province” militants killed and 16 other injured

Armed forces affiliated to the third field army, which operate between south and central Sinai, foiled on Friday morning an attack launched by militants believed to be from the Islamic State-affiliated (IS) group “Sinai Province”, killing nine attackers and injuring 16.The IS-affiliated group is believed to be currently adapting a new war strategy that is based on targeting forces all across the Sinai Peninsula (not only in the North).

Italian energy company Eni plans to increase investments in Egypt to $3.5 bilion in 2017

Italian energy company Eni plans to increase its energy exploration investments in Egypt to $3.5 billion in 2017, the company’s CEO Claudio Descalzi said on Thursday after a meeting with Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi. Descalzi briefed the Egyptian President on the latest developments regarding the massive Zohr gas field recently discovered off the Mediterranean coast, saying production is expected to start before the end of the year, a presidency statement read. Zohr, discovered by Eni in August 2015, is the largest gas field in the Mediterranean with an estimated 850 billion cubic metres of gas.

Trilateral meeting between Egypt, Ethiopia and Sudan

Minister of Foreign Affairs of Egypt Sameh Shoukry called on Tuesday for a tripartite meeting with Ethiopia and Sudan in a phone conversation with his Ethiopian counterpart Workneh Gebeyehu. In March 2015, the three countries signed a declaration of principles whereby they agreed on the construction of the dam, but with technical studies to be conducted in order to guarantee that Egypt and Sudan’s share of the Nile water will not be affected.
