Shaker meets the Russian company Rosatom to help Egypt improve standards and legislation of the nuclear energy

Minister of Electricity Mohamed Shaker will present a report to Al-Sisi regarding the outcomes of the meeting with the Russian company Rosatom to sign the Dabaa nuclear power plant contracts. Government sources said that the negotiations with Russia are about to be completed within weeks, especially since a governmental committee held intensive discussions and meetings with Russian officials during the past two weeks and agreed upon the final form to complete the contract. The sources indicated that the ongoing discussions include the supply of nuclear fuel to nuclear power generation units, obligations of each party during operations, maintenance and units repair, reprocessing method of the wasted/consumed nuclear fuel and how to deal with it, provision of expertise and technical support during the operation, and helping Egypt in improving standards and legislation of the nuclear energy and infrastructure sector. The sources said that Shaker will present the report to Al-Sisi before the societal dialogue, planned to be held in the city of Dabaa on 25 February. The government agreed with the Rosatom State Nuclear Energy Corporation on the establishment of a nuclear power plant with a capacity of 4,800MW. The agreement included the signing of four contracts for the engineering, supply, operation, and maintenance of the power plant for a period of 10 years. It also includes the supply of fuel for 60 years.

Armed forces affiliated to the third field army managed on Saturday to kill a leading figure in the IS-affiliated group of “Sinai Province” in a sweeping operation in central Sinai. He had been responsible for killing five security conscripts recently. The leading figure killed, named Hamd Salem Soliman, was 30 years old and specialised in planting improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and launching military attacks against police and army checkpoints based in North and central Sinai. Soliman killed five security conscripts on 23 January when they were back to their military units based in central Sinai following a short vacation. They were killed after other militants forced them from a minibus and opened fire on them.

Three army soldiers were killed and four others injured in an explosion in the El-Halal mountain area in central Sinai, the Egyptian army said on Friday. The explosion occurred during a raid on “terrorist hideouts” by the third field army and police forces in the area. The raid also resulted in the death of three militants and the arrest of three others, an army spokesman said on his official Facebook page. Egypt’s army and police forces have been waging a war over the past three years against an Islamist militant insurgency in North Sinai. Hundreds have been killed in the violence. Egypt’s President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi issued a decree establishing an emergency state in parts of North Sinai in October 2014, and it has been renewed since then. Under the state of emergency, Egypt’s army and police have the authority to “take any action necessary to confront terrorism and protect public and private property in the areas under the emergency state”. The curfew lasts from 5pm to 7am.

Giulio Regeni murder mystery is continuing. But, in the past 48 hours, it emerged a dichotomy between what is reported by international media as New York Times and Reuters and as Italian Corriere della Sera and Repubblica, and the Egyptian authorities interpretation. Beyond the denial, there is an ongoing attempt to deflect investigations.

Some witnesses, believed to be reliable at first, now clash with intelligence sources commentaries, separately and anonymously interviewed by New York Times, and with surveillance cameras which should have recorded the arrest on January 25.

As revealed by the three witnesses of the intelligence, Regeni’s growing interest about the Egyptian trade unions, opposed by President Al Sisi, would have persuaded local authorities to think that the Italian Ph.D was a spy.

According to Corriere della Sera, last December the University of Cambridge, near which was Regeni graduate student, would have asked him to step up research within trade unions and opposition movements. For this reason, the last weeks of his life should be marked by the attendance at meetings of such movements and the knowledge of trade union and Muslim Brotherhood members.

But what did really happen on January 25? Regeni’s Facebook chat denied that he was arrested by two policemen. Here, the Ph.D talks to his girlfriend and his professor after two hours compared with some witnesses report.

It’s evident that Regeni’s contacts have made the Egyptian intelligence suspicious before January 25, the day of his disappearance.
