According to Palestinian Center for Human Rights’s investigations, at approximately 06:00 on Wednesday, 16 November 2016, an armed group attacked Palestinian security officers from the National Security Service, Police and Special Units, which is always present in Daraj al-Aqaba area in Nablus’ Old City, north of the West Bank. Violent clashes erupted between the two parties, due to which 5 Palestinian police officers were wounded. At approximately 06:30, the clashes intensified and, as a result, a bullet penetrated a window of a house belonging to Hilda Bassam al-Osta (38). The bullet hit Hilda in the chest, due to which she died even before she was taken to hospital.
On Wednesday morning, Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF) broke into and attacked the headquarters of the Palestine National Initiative (PNI) movement in central Ramallah and arrested two youths. Eyewitnesses said that Israeli soldiers broke into the city with military jeeps, then stormed the headquarters, raided them, arrested two youths and confiscated computers. During the attack, clashes broke out between the youths and IOF, who threw intense teargas and rubber-coated metal bullets, injuring two Palestinians.
A suicide bomber has rammed a truck into a German consulate in Afghanistan, killing at least six civilians and wounding 120, officials said. Gunman attacked the building after the blast, in the city of Mazar-e-Sharif, battling with German and Afghan forces. The Taliban said it carried out the attack in retaliation for air strikes last week in Kunduz province. Local police said at least one suspect had been arrested in connection with the bombing.
On Wednesday, Saudi forces stationed on the southern border repelled an attack by Houthi militias and forces loyal to ousted President Ali Abdullah Saleh. The attack targeted Al-Dood Mountain in the Al-Khobah area. Saudi forces launched a counterattack that resulted in the death of at least 15 Houthi fighters and the capture of four others by the Parachute Brigade. Dozens of militiamen fled the battleground, abandoning their weapons.
Three citizens were killed and nine injured, including four in critical cases when the Saudi fighter jets struck Manakhah district of Sanaa governorate overnight. The strikes have caused damage also at roads, houses and residents’ cars.
Nigerian militants say they have blown up again an oil pipeline carrying crude for export from Shell’s Forcados terminal in the country’s south. It’s the third attack in eight days on the Trans Forcados pipeline network. Militants and community leaders want development and a bigger share of revenues from oil that has massively polluted the southern Niger Delta. The Niger Delta Avengers said the Tuesday night’s bombing is to reinforce warnings for oil companies to desist from repairing attacked installations.
Syria warned Israel against future raids after the Israeli army responded to errant mortar fire that struck the northern Golan Heights. A mortar shell fired from Syria landed in Israeli territory on Wednesday morning, causing neither injury nor damage. The projectile, as with most others emanating from the war-torn country, appeared to be accidental spillover rather than an intentional attack on Israel, the Israel Defense Forces said in a statement. Nevertheless, the Israeli army fired back into Syria, hitting “artillery positions belonging to the Syrian regime in the northern Syrian Golan Heights,” the military said.
The Israeli military says it has struck a Syrian army artillery position after a rocket from Syria hit the Israeli-controlled part of the Golan Heights. The military believes the rocket attack, which caused no casualties, was errant fire that spilled over the frontier Wednesday from the civil war.
Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF) on Wednesday morning shot and wounded a Palestinian younth in Hawara town south of Nablus, following an alleged stabbing attack. After the shooting, Za’tara and Hawara checkpoints were closed, and the Palestinian Ministry of Health affirmed that a young man was injured by Israeli gunfire at Hawara checkpoint.
On Wednesday the IDF launched an artillery strike on Syrian army targets in the norther Golan Heights in response to a mortar shell that fell in Israeli territory earlier in the day. The mortar shell was thought to have breached the border as fallout from fighting in Syria, however the IDF said it holds the Syrian regime responsible for all activities emanating from its territory. No injuries or damages were reported in the attack.
Errant fire from the conflict in Syrian has sporadically landed in Israeli territory during the country’s more than five-year civil war.
