The Lebanese-Jordanian summit will address the Syrian and Iraqi refugees crisis

The Baabda Presidential Palace has completed arrangements for President Michel Aoun’s trip to Egypt and Jordan next week, his second Arab trip after his election as president. On Monday, Aoun will first meet in Cairo with his Egyptian counterpart Abdul Fattah al-Sisi and Prime Minister Ibrahim Mahlab. He will later head to the Arab League headquarters for talks with its Secretary-General Ahmed AboulGheit. For their part, Lebanese ministers will hold meetings with their Egyptian counterparts. On Tuesday, Aoun will head to Jordan for talks with Jordanian King Abdullah II. The Lebanese-Jordanian summit will address the Syrian and Iraqi refugees crisis and study the ways to alleviate their impact on the economies of both countries.

The Cairo Court for Urgent Matters has designated the militant group “Hasm” as a terrorist group

The Cairo Court for Urgent Matters has designated on Saturday the militant group “Hasm”, which claimed responsibility for a number of deadly attacks on security forces as well as assassination attempts on public figures over the past year, as a terrorist group. The little-known group claimed the assassination attempt on the deputy prosecutor general in September 2016 as well as the assassination attempt on leading Islamic cleric Ali Gomaa in August of the same year. In December 2016, Hasm also claimed responsibility for a deadly explosion at a police checkpoint in the Haram district in Giza, which killed 6 policemen and left 4 injured. In mid-January, the High State Security Prosecution referred 304 people to military trials for alleged membership in Hasm

Yemen won’t suspend counter-terrorism operations with the US governments

After the US commando raid in Al-Bayda against al-Qaeda, which killed many civilians, Yemen won’t suspend counter-terrorism operations with the US governments. Sana’a had not withdrawn its permission for the US to carry out special terrorism operations but the country and President Hadi expressed their reservations about the last operation. Any operations carry out in Yemen should be in consultation with Yemen authorities and should prevent civilian casualties.

Saudi sentenced to prison for communicating with Daesh via whatsapp

A Saudi national was sentenced for 7 years in prison by the Specialized Criminal Court in Riyadh for supporting Daesh and communicating with an official of the terrorist organization via WhatsApp. The man confessed he wanted to join Daesh and do a terrorist operation against Alawites. He also informed people of how to enter Syria via Turkey and used social networks to communicate with the organization. For that reasons he was condemned to 7 years in prison, his mobile phone was seized by the court and his account on the social media application was closed.

Martin Kobler is to be replaced by former Palestinian Prime Minister Salam Fayyad

The UN Special envoy to Libya, Martin Kobler, is to be replaced by former Palestinian Prime Minister Salam Fayyad, in a decision by the new UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. In his final report to the Council yesterday, Kobler said: “The citizens of Libya deserve security and an end to the rampant crime and lawlessness.” While at times optimistic about Libya’s economic situation, he insisted corruption remained, health services were inadequate and poor financial management continued. The new special envoy, US-educated Salam Fayyad, was Palestinian finance minister from 2002 to 2005 and Palestinian prime minister from 2007 to 2013. His background is in finance, having previously worked for both the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund, and is regarded as having been a successful finance minister. Seen as both a conciliator and a pragmatist, he will, however, have his work cut out for him in trying to implement a Libyan Political Agreement that is widely seen as broken and unimplementable.

Chairman of the Iranian Parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Commission Alaeddin Boroujerdi said the Islamic Republic is not going to allow the US to overstep its redlines. “Today, Iran is stronger (than the US) both politically and strategically and has great capabilities in all fields, which Washington does not favor”. Iran has specific redlines in the region and we will never allow the US to cross them, Boroujerdi said in an interview.“Americans have always been seeking to defeat Iran and its allies (in the region), the Resistance (Front) in particular, but have failed to do so,” he added.

Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi will receive a phone call from United States President Donald Trump on Thursday evening as per a request from the latter. This would be the first phone call Trump makes with Abadi since he assumed U.S. presidency on January 20th. Alsumaria News quoted “an informed political source” a saying that the call will tackle political and security developments in Iraq and the Middle East, but did not mention specifics, like the muslism ban. Trump has set the war against Islamic State militants as a top priority for his administration and during a precedent call on 18th january Trump pledged support for Iraq and invited the Iraqi premier to visit the United States.

Iraqi President and the increase of the oil share for the governorates of Sulaimani, Erbil, Salahadin and Mosul

Iraqi President Fuad Masum requested,during a meeting with Iraqi Oil Minister Abdul Jabar al-Luaibi on Thursday, an increase in the share of oil to five governorates, including Sulaimani, Erbil and Duhok, which suffer from the high price of kerosene as winter temperatures set in across the Kurdistan Region.
“There is a need for the increase of the oil share for the governorates of Sulaimani, Erbil, Salahadin and Mosul,”the official website of the Iraqi Presidency said. Masum and Luaibi also discussed achievements obtained after the production cut of oil and the Iraqi Oil Ministry’s upcoming plans to meet the needs of the country.

On Wednesday the Tobruk-based Libyan House of Representatives said that it considers a recent Memorandum of Understanding signed between the Italian prime minister Paolo Gentiloni and Chairman of the Presidential Council of Libya Fayez al-Sarraj to be null and void. The agreement was for cooperation and development and against clandestine migration, human trafficking and smuggling. It also included measures to strengthen border control. The anouncement was made by the Tobruk parliamentary body itself in a statement through the Al-Wasat website, which said that the presidential council and its president did not have jurisdiction to make such choices on the basis of the constitution and judicial sentences. ”An issue like that of clandestine migration, ” the statement said, ”is one of the important issues linked to the choice of the Libyan people through the representatives that they elected democratically through voting, and not the interests of individuals that do not have the trust of the House of Representatives, which is the legitimate power, nor the interests of European countries, and especially the Italian Republic.” Italy, it continued, ”is trying to get rid of the burden and the dangerous problems caused by clandestine migration at the security, economic and social level in exchange for a bit of material support that it is forced to offer to reduce the number of illegal migrants.”

Foreign Minister Çavuşoğlu: “Turkey needs special forces troops for Raqqa”

The strategic hills overlooking the northern Syrian town of al-Bab were captured by the Turkey-backed Free Syrian Army (FSA), clashes have resumed for the town’s full control, the Turkish military said in a statement on Wednesday. Speaking at a press conference in capital Ankara, Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım said that the FSA have surrounded Al-Bab on all sides and clashes resume for full control of town. He added that coordination with U.S.-led coalition and Russia prevents possible clashes with Assad forces as their troops move closer to al-Bab from southeast. Meanwhile, Foreign Minister Çavuşoğlu said yesterday that Turkey and other regional powers should provide special forces troops for the eventual assault on Daesh’s Syrian stronghold, the city of Raqqa.
