“Don’t send Nigerian refugees back to violence”, UN urges Cameroon

The Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has urged the Cameroonian authority not to send Nigerian refugees back to the Boko Haram violence they fled from. Despite warnings, Nigerian refugees and asylum-seekers who fled Boko Haram violence continue to be returned from Cameroon, underscoring the need to accord international protection to those in need. “We appeal once again to the authorities in Cameroon to refrain from further forced returns and to ensure protection to those fleeing insecurity and persecution in Nigeria […] This is in accordance with Cameroon’s national and international obligations,” UNHCR said.

Since the beginning of 2018, 385 Nigerians refugees and asylum-seekers had been forcibly returned from Cameroon, the majority of them in March. In total, the UN agency has registered some 87,600 Nigerian refugees in the country. UNHCR said: “The forced returns are in violation of the principle of no forced returns or non-refoulement.

 

Alfano calls Salamé on Libya

Foreign Minister Angelino Alfano spoke with the UN Special Representative to Libya, Ghassam Salame’, on Tuesday. During the conversation the diplomats discussed the priorities for the political process leading to the stabilisation of Libya. Alfano reportedly reiterated Italy’s full commitment to ensuring the unity of Salame’s action, avoiding dispersion and maintaining unity within the international community in support of the negotiations underway. The minister also asked that the UNHCR and IOM become fully operational in Libya as quickly as possible to ensure the respect of migrants’ rights.

Nearly 90,000 Rohingya escape Myanmar violence as humanitarian crisis looms

United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) stated that more than 73,000 Rohingya Muslims have reached Bangladesh in an attempt to escape Myanmar army’s and the Buddhist nationalists’ attacks in Rakhine State. European Rohingya Council (ERC) President Hla Kyaw said that the government will later “attempt a massacre”. He also said that the advancement of Rohingya genocide is the primary goal of the army. He added, “the second goal is to leave them for dead by preventing aid”. Rohingya Muslims were grateful to President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan for his reaction against the Myanmar government. On Friday he stated that the persecution of the Rohingya Muslims was equivalent to a genocide. The massacre against Rohingya Muslims is being protested around the world.

Saudi Arabia condemns Myanmar’s Rohingya attacks

Saudi Arabia’s mission to the United Nations highlighted the Kingdom’s condemnation for the attacks on Myanmar’s Muslim Rohingya minority. Saudi Arabia as the leader of the islamic Ummah has caled for a resolution to condemn the human rights violations committed against the muslim minority. Saudi Arabia ha stressed the security council to adress this issue on its agenda. Also has expressed its concern to secretary general, which resulted in a condemnation from United Nation. More than 2,600 houses have been burned down in Rohingya-majority areas of Myanmar’s northwest in the last week. About 58,600 Rohingya have fled the violence into Bangladesh from Myanmar, according to UN refugee agency UNHCR, as aid workers there struggle to cope.
