Maduro and Putin talked by phone in search of “strengthening bilateral relations”

CARACAS – The presidents of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, and Russia, Vladimir Putin, spoke on Friday by phone about the elections in their countries and the World Cup, with the interest of “strengthening bilateral relations,” according to a Caracas statement. The document released by the Venezuelan government stated that Maduro expressed his joy and admiration for the extraordinary triumph obtained by President Vladimir Putin and the people in the voting last Sunday in Russia, “highlighting the exemplary character of the event”. Putin, on his part, “raised votes of success for the coming electoral process of the 20 of May” in the petroleum country, in which the Venezuelan governor will look for to be reelected until 2025.

In Rio de Janeiro, ‘complete vulnerability’ as violence surges

Violence is shaping Rio de Janeiro community’s life. Since the end of 2016 Summer Olymipics Game, Rio is plagued by a sharp rise in violence and lawlessness reminiscents of the dark periods of 1980s and 1990s. Since 2008, In order to prepare the 2014 World Cup and 2016 Olympics Games, government launched a programme to secure Rio’s favelas, establishing a system of community policing. For few years this programme seemed to work and a 10billion dollars investment in infrastracture was financed, giving the hope that Olympics could create better conditions and reduce inequality. It didn’t work and the main reason was the massive corruption which completely ran out the money. Now, the violence and criminal activities are increasing and the social context is shaped by complete vulnerability, denounced Antonio Carlos Costa, head of Rio de Paz, an association that give support to the victims of violence.

 

 

Venezuela wins Russia and China backing as it says it is honoring debt

Venezuela has ottenied easier debt terms from Russia and got a vote of confidence from China on Wednesday, as the oil-rich country said it had starting making interest payments on bonds after a delay that had threatened to trigger a default. A debt restructuring deal with Russia that allows Caracas to make “minimal” payments to Moscow in the next six years, together with a separate statement from the Chinese Foreign Ministry that Venezuela was capable of handing the debt issue “appropriately”. It was underlined that the reserve of support its socialist government enjoys of easy measures from both two countries. Venezuela has borrowed billions of dollars from Russia and China over the years, primarily through oil-for-loan deals. The two countries could provide a lifeline to Venezuela as it seeks to keep its deeply depressed economy solvent, even as U.S. and European sanctions target the government of President Nicolas Maduro.  On Wednesday, the Economy Ministry said it had started transferring $200 million in interest payments on those bonds, which mature in 2019 and 2024.
