Meta-Steinmeier : excellent ties

Albanian Presdiente Ilir Meta held an official visit to the Federal Republic of Germany at the inivtation of his counterpart Frank-Walter Steimeier.  Meta expressed gratitude to Germany for support and assistance it has provived Albania and Albanian people in the process of EU integration and NATO membership. The two presidents evaluated completion of ratification procedures by the two sides of agreement in the field of social insurrances.President Steinmeier appreciated very important relations between Germany and Albania and emphasized that this visit is the best evidence  of theese special relations.

Prime Ministers of Bulgaria, Poland Speak against Two-Speed Europe

“The European Union should stay united and avoid moving at two speeds”, Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borissov and Polish Prime Minister Beata Szydlo told a news briefing after their meeting here on Wednesday. Polish Prime Minister Szydlo commended Bulgaria for the efficient controls of the EU border and said that the country is fully prepared to access the Schengen area. Szydlo went on to say that Bulgaria and Poland had a lot of things in common, among which a belief that unity should be the foundation to the future of the EU. “We believe that some countries are trying to divide Europe for the sake of their interests but we think that unity is key”, said Szydlo. For his part, Borissov said Bulgaria managed to protect its border at the cost of 160 million euro in EU aid, while other countries had received billions without much result. Borissov said that Bulgaria is honouring its commitments to NATO. He added that the issue of sanctions against Russia may be raised during the Bulgarian presidency of the Council of the EU and that a solution should be found in a calm and pragmatic manner. Borissov said Polish Prime Minister Szydlo and he discussed the future of the mining industry and large combustion plants which are threatened by an upcoming adoption of an EU directive. The two countries will put up an united front on the issue of mining and energy, said Szydlo.

EU launches Alliance for Torture-Free Trade

The EU, together with Argentina and Mongolia, on 18 September launched an initiative aiming to end the trade in goods used for capital punishment and torture during UN General Assembly. The alliance aim to stop the trade of instruments used for torture and death penalty. This ban will hit the trades of baton will metal spike, electric shock belts, grabbers that seise people by the waist or limb while electrocuting them, chemicals used to execute people and forced injection systems that go with them. Countries that will sign the agreement will have to take four action points: take measures to control and restrict exports of these goods, Equip customs authorities with appropriate tools (as a platform to monitor trade flows, exchange information and restrict exports of these goods), make technical assistance available to help countries with setting up and implementing laws to ban this trade and last of all to exchange practices for efficient control and enforcement systems.

Serbia’s EU accession depends on relations with Kosovo

EP rapporteur for Serbia David McAllister says negotiations on Serbia’s EU accession EU require “constant movement towards better relations with Kosovo”. He told the Belgrade-based tabloid Kurir that “this process should gradually lead to the normalization of relations between the two sides, with both being able to exercise their rights and fulfill their responsibilities.” “The normalization of relations should benefit the citizens of Serbia and Kosovo and is essential for preserving peace and stability in the region”, McAllister said, and welcomed Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic’s initiative to launch a domestic dialogue about this issue. The European Parliament (EP) official from Germany also remarked that that the EU will push neither Belgrade nor Pristina toward taking the initiative, and emphasized that “a sustainable normalization of relations will never be achieved by force, but only by consent of both sides.” McAllister also touched on “the state of the media in Serbia” to say that threats, violence and intimidation of journalists continue to be an issue of concern.

Libyan coastguard burn refugee vessel in Mediterranean

A Libyan coastguard unit has been filmed destroying a boat used to traffic people by setting it ablaze. The waters between the north African coastline and the EU continue to draw illegal people smugglers in high numbers, while authorities push to prevent it.The incident adds to the maritime force’s already growing reputation for intimidating tactics.In part funded by the EU to keep migrants from reaching European shores, the Libyan naval defense intercepted 1,074 refugees in the Mediterranean on Saturday.The operation saw refugees picked up by the coastguard west of the capital Tripoli, before being transferred to city of Zawiya, Reuters reports.Around €46 million in EU funding has been poured into boosting the capacities of Libyan border patrols. In July, the EU said the money would be largely used in “strengthening” the coastguard of the civil war-hit nation.

Report: Internal EU defense research could clash with bilateral US relations

A new report by Ares, a network of European think tanks, underlined a planned move by the EU to boost cooperation in defense between the members states, that could have a big impact on the defense industrial relations between the single EU states and USA. An European common defense is becoming every day more real and to let this cooperation begin EU wants to promote a stronger cooperation between EU and USA that would shift away from present bilateral ties, which block deeper cooperation between EU member states. Those bilateral agreement hamper cooperation on technological exchange between EU members because there are rules that deny the possibility of working with non-U.S partners. The report also point out a lack of reciprocity and an absence of an equal regulation of the arms industry in the U.S. and the EU. The point is to build agreements that is mutually beneficial and that let EU to build an autonomous defense program.

President Radev Urges Europe to Drop Idealism When it Comes to Migration and Security

Bulgarian President Rumen Radev said during the final news conference of the 13th Arraiolos Group Meeting of presidents of EU Member States in Valletta, Malta, that when it comes to the security of people, there is no place for compromises and illusions. “The European Union must drop its idealistic approach and analyze the problem in depth”, he said as quoted by his Press Secretariat. In Radev’s words, the efforts of the EU on migration must focus on preventing new migrant flows by helping to provide prospects for a good life for the people in their countries of origin. “Instead of providing social support to the migrants in Europe, we have to orient our policies towards creating stable societies to ensure a normal living in the countries of origin of illegal migrants”, the President said. He said that solidarity and social justice should remain key issues in the debate on the future of Europe. “If Europe is to remain an important factor on the global stage, we have to preserve the principles of solidarity and cohesion among the member states. Achieving equal living standards in Europe’s East and West, and equal pay for equal work across the EU is an irrevocable conditions for the Union to be successful and united in its foreign policy”, Radev said.

EU provided Funds for reconstruction of the Doboj Courthouse

Head of the EU Delegation and EU Special Representative in BiH Ambassador Lars-Gunnar Wigemark, President of the High Judicial and Prosecutorial Council of BiH Milan Tegeltija, and Chief Prosecutor of District Prosecutor’s Office  in Doboj Željka Radović officially opened on 12 September 2017 the Doboj Courthouse that was severely damaged in the 2014 floods. Ambassador Wigemark underlined how much is important to have a well-functioning, well equipped Courthouse for establishing the rule of law and conducting of criminal, commercial and civil -proceedings. The reconstruction of the Doboj Courthouse was funded by the European Union in the amount of EUR 715,000.

Serbia and Montenegro “main candidates to join EU – in 2025”

European Commission President Jean Claude Juncker has sent a letter of intent to the European Parliament president and the chairperson of the Council of the EU. This happened on Wednesday, Tanjug is reporting today, citing the European Western Balkans website. In the letter, Juncker “announced that the European Commission plans to create the strategy for the successful accession of Serbia and Montenegro to the European Union by the end of next year, with a perspective of accession to the EU in 2025”. The website added that “in one of the ten priorities of the ‘Roadmap for a More United, Stronger and More Democratic Union’ Serbia and Montenegro are mentioned as the main candidates from the Western Balkans to join the European Union, whose strategy for successful accession should be created”.

Macedonia wants EU membership process, Greek talks to run in tandem, FM Dimitrov tells Reuters

FM Dimitrov said to Reuters that Macedonia hopes it has done enough to convince the European Union to start accesion talks while a quarter of a century long row with neighbouring Greece rumbles on. Greece has vetoed the ex Yugoslav republic’s attempts to join both the EU and NATO beacuse according to Dimitrov the name Macedonia implies a territorial claim over Greece’own northerly region of Macedonia. Time it takes to go through the EU membership process might give Greece, which has previously insisted that Skopje use a compound name such as “New” or “Upper” Macedonia, enough comfort that process can be halted if needed. European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker gave a boost to Macedonia’s EU hopes, and those of Serbia, Albania, Montenegro, Bosnia and Kosovo, saying on Wednesday: “We must maintain a credible enlargement perspective for the Western Balkans.
