CHP leader, Turkey must take contact with Assad

in ASIA/EUROPE by

People’s Party (CHP) leader Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu said that Turkish government should  make contact with the Bashar al-Assad regime in Syria.  “The way to make peace between Turkey and Syria, to create rapprochement between the two countries and to jointly focus on maintaining [Syria’s] territorial integrity is [to establish] dialogue between Turkey and Syria. We should engage with Syria one way or another if we do not want terror organizations finding shelter in this country”, Kılıçdaroğlu told the Ankara bureau chiefs of media outlets on Jan. 29. The CHP has announced its support to the operation but has also reiterated criticism of the Justice and Development Party’s (AKP) policies since the beginning of turmoil in Syria in March 2011. Kılıçdaroğlu accused the AKP of jumping into what he calls “the Middle East swamp” by intervening into Syria’s internal affairs, accusing the government of helping the YPG gain international legitimacy. Kılıçdaroğlu also voiced discomfort for the participation of the Free Syrian Army (FSA), drawn from various opposition groups mainly of Sunni Arabs and Turkmens. His remarks followed CHP deputy Öztürk Yılmaz’s statement that the FSA is “partially made up of jihadist terrorists” including al-Qaeda and al-Nusra militants. Meanwhile, Kılıçdaroğlu revealed that he plans to visit to Damascus in the coming period, in order to help restore broken ties between Turkey and Syria. Kılıçdaroğlu reiterated his expectation that the government could opt to call early presidential and parliamentary elections this year, warning that “Operation Olive Branch” must not be “politicized” for political gain.

Russian lawmakers blast Pentagon’s latest statement on Syria as ‘lies and lack of principles’

in ASIA/PRESS RELEASE/REGIONS by

Senior Russian MPs have described an allegation by the Pentagon that Moscow and Damascus showed insufficient commitment to defeating IS terrorists as snobbery and lies, designed to cover up US failure to depose the lawful Syrian government. “The statement is nothing new, the same typical snobbery. Even with total resistance from the US special services, those who know how much Russia and the Syrian military forces have done, how many lives were lost, simply cannot say that Russia has done nothing,” Senator Frants Klintsevich, deputy head of the Upper House Committee for Defense and Security, told RBC in response to remarks by Pentagon spokesman Eric Pahon. “Nothing is sacred to these people. Now leading news agencies around the world that are being managed by them will tell us that they are the greatest. And we will disprove this”, Klintsevich added. “I think that, in the nearest future, the Americans will face a great disappointment. They have installed so many time bombs for themselves”.

Syria’s Eastern Ghouta and the ‘complete catastrophe’

in ASIA/PRESS RELEASE/REGIONS by

The 400,000 civilians besieged in the Syrian enclave of Eastern Ghouta face “complete catastrophe” because aid deliveries are blocked and hundreds of people need urgent medical evacuation, U.N. humanitarian adviser Jan Egeland said today. The area east of Damascus had been “completely sealed off” since September, leaving U.N. aid convoys and evacuations as a potential lifeline facing a “bureaucratic wall of inaction”, he wanted to underline. He added “We cannot continue like that. If we only get a fraction of what is needed it will be a complete catastrophe,” he said. “What about a ceasefire now in this area and a green light to all medical evacuations?” As well as people wounded in the fighting, there were a growing number of acutely malnourished children, which meant they were very close to dying, he said.
