US Angry at IRGC over Battle with Daesh

in POLITICS/PRESS RELEASE/REGIONS by

A former Iranian foreign minister attributed the US plan to designate the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps as a terrorist organization to the IRGC’s effectual war against the Daesh (ISIL) terrorist group which he said benefits from the backing of Washington. Without the IRGC’s advisory support for Baghdad and Damascus, Daesh would have undoubtedly dominated Iraq and Syria, Head of the Founding Council and Board of Trustees of the Islamic Azad University Ali Akbar Velayati told reporters in Tehran on Tuesday, after a meeting with Syria’s ambassador to Iran. That is why the Americans, namely the sponsors of Daesh militants, are angry at the IRGC, he said, adding that they are unable to harm the IRGC, underlining the Iranian nation’s unity and support for the IRGC and the country’s territorial integrity.

Turkish army conducts military drill at Iraqi border

in EUROPE/PRESS RELEASE/REGIONS by

Turkish armed forces started a military drill at the Iraqi border on Monday, the army said, a week ahead of a Kurdish referendum in northern Iraq which Turkey has asked to be called off. Prime Minister Binali Yildirim said the planned Sept. 25 referendum was as an issue of national security, and warned that Turkey would take any necessary steps in response. President Tayyip Erdoğan said on Sunday that he will meet Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi this week to discuss their concerns about the referendum. Turkey, the United States and other Western powers have advised authorities in the semi-autonomous region to cancel the vote, worrying that it would create tensions that would distract from the war on Daesh in Iraq and Syria.

Russia Hopes Fight Against Daesh in Syria to End ‘in Coming Months’

in MIDLE EAST/PRESS RELEASE/REGIONS by

Russia’s presidential envoy for Syria has commented on the Syrian peace talks currently underway in Astana. He said he believes that Daesh terrorists in the country would be defeated soon due to the Syrian army’s successful operation to free Deir ez-Zor, which resulted in the lifting of the three-year blockade of the city. He pointed out that Russia was seeking a peaceful solution to the political crisis in Syria. “But once again we hope that the opposition has common sense and that it will pursue a peaceful solution to the existing problems, search for common ground with the government on the issue”, Lavrentyev said. When commenting on the Astana-6 talks on the Syrian settlement, the Russian envoy said that the Syrian ceasefire guarantor states — namely Russia, Iran and Turkey — are ready to consider the participation of other countries in military policing of the safe zones in the country. Finally other important issuses will be the application of a bigger ceasefire and the Idlib safe zone costruction, he added.

US sends arms worth $2.2 bln to terrorist organizations in Syria

in EUROPE/PRESS RELEASE/REGIONS by

The U.S. has provided approximately US $2.2 billion worth of arms and ammunition to the People’s Protection Units (YPG), the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and other similar terrorist organizations under the guise of fighting against Daesh. A report published by the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP) and the Balkan Investigative Reporting Network (BIRN) stated that Washington is using “vaguely worded legal documents which obscure Syria as the weapons’ final destination – a practice experts say threatens global efforts to combat arms trafficking and puts the Eastern European governments who sell the weapons and ammunition at risk of breaching international law”. The U.S. bypasses checks on international weapons trafficking, and omits documentary evidence regarding the final destination of the weapons. Weapons can be diverted to any group, a dangerous practice that puts the global arms control system at risk. The report investigated the Pentagon’s weapons shipment to Syria using procurement records, ship-tracking data, official reports, leaked emails, and interviews with insiders.

Iran Has Marginalized US in Region: IRGC Commander

in MIDLE EAST/Senza categoria by

Lieutenant Commander of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) Brigadier General Hossein Salami highlighted Iran’s growing power in the Middle East and said the balance of power in the region has changed in favor of the Islamic Republic. The commander further pointed to the return of the body of an Iranian military adviser who was recently decapitated by the Daesh (ISIS or ISIL) terrorist group in Syria, saying that it indicated Iran’s power over hegemonic states and their mercenaries in the region. Lebanese Hezbollah Resistance Movement on Thursday received the body of Martyr Hojaji from Daesh based on a ceasefire deal between the two sides. The transfer of Lebanon’s captured soldiers and two martyrs, as well as the body of Martyr Hojaji, took place after the buses carrying Daesh militants and their families arrived in the ancient city of Palmyra in Homs Province. In recent years, the Middle East region has been plagued with Takfiri terrorist groups like Daesh that are believed to have been created and supported by the West and some regional Arab countries.
