Schulz is working on the turnaround

in EUROPE/POLITICS by

The grand coalition is unpopular with the SPD base. Party leader Martin Schulz fights for every vote at the SPD congress that will take place in Bonn next Sunday. Shortly before the beginning of a meeting with party delegates, he praised the political results of the exploratory talks with the Union.
For Schulz, instead, dealing with his party is more complicated. Many of his party colleagues reject a new grand coalition. In Saxony-Anhalt, Thuringia and Berlin, the delegates spoke against a new alliance with the CDU and CSU. Now Schulz has to convince the doubting delegates in North Rhine-Westphalia, Bavaria and Rhineland-Palatinate this week to give up their opposition to coalition negotiations by Sunday’s party congress.
The party leader fights for every vote, his political future largely depends on whether a grand coalition comes about. But the conditions are tough: the party’s younger generation mobilizes against it.
Despite the criticism on pensions, refugee policy and jobs Schulz defends the exploratory results with the Union.

Germany ‘rejects 5,000 Turkish asylum applications’

in EUROPE/PRESS RELEASE/REGIONS by

Germany’s immigration authority has rejected more than 5,000 asylum applications filed by Turkish citizens. The Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF) had ruled on 8,547 asylum applications in 2017 filed by Turkish citizens, and rejected 5,040 of them. German diplomats said although asylum applications by Turkish citizens had increased since last year’s failed coup attempt in Turkey, the vast majority of asylum applications were filed by citizens of Kurdish origin. The asylum applications of ex-officials involved in the attempted July 2016 military takeover in Turkey has been a source of growing tension between Ankara and Berlin.

EU Minister Çelik set for talks, Merkel wants end to accession bid

in EUROPE/PRESS RELEASE/REGIONS by

Turkey’s EU Minister Ömer Çelik will hold talks with the foreign ministers of EU countries at an informal meeting this week, following the harsh debate between Ankara and Berlin after the detainment in Turkey of the two German citizens. “Turkey is moving away from the path of the rule of law at a very fast speed,” Merkel said the last day. Turkey responded that she should not “use Turkey and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan as election campaign material.”This lead to the EU’s term president, Estonia, hosting a Gymnich meeting on Sept. 7 and 8 in Talinn, at which EU foreign ministers will discuss a wide range of issues in an informal environment.
