Ukraine’s army intensified training drills by 30 percent in 2017

in EUROPE/PRESS RELEASE/REGIONS by

Ukraine’s armed forces have carried out around 5,000 training drills in 2017, some 30 percent more than last year’s figure, according to the chief of the army’s Operational Training Department, Colonel Ihor Podolyan.  “Every combat unit trained for missions in the (Donbas war zone) undergoes two brigade-level exercises at two different firing ranges” states the colonel. Constant drills are being conducted also by the air force. The General Staff is continuing to work on adapting Ukraine’s army training to NATO standards, Podolyan said. Ukraine will soon approve a military terminology manual for training and deployment of forces, which will help Ukraine’s forces become interoperable with NATO forces, he said. Apart from that, Ukraine’s best combat units are continuing to receive NATO-style training. In particular, eight infantry battalions and one company have finished Joint Multinational Training Group advanced courses conducted by the U.S. Army.

Xi Jinping’s strong army

in ASIA/PRESS RELEASE/REGIONS by

China’s military should take solid steps toward a strong army as socialism with Chinese characteristics has entered a new era, said Xi Jinping, general secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC).

Xi made the remarks when meeting senior military officers in Beijing Thursday.

Xi, also Chinese president and chairman of the Central Military Commission (CMC), urged the army to remain true to its original aspiration and keep its mission firmly in mind. He asked the army to learn and implement the spirit of the 19th CPC National Congress, following the road of building a strong army with Chinese characteristics and promoting the modernization of national defense and the army. “We should strive to fully transform the people’s armed forces into a world-class military by the mid-21st century,” Xi said. The President asked the members of the CMC, newly chosen at the first plenary session of the 19th CPC Central Committee, to be keenly aware of the trust bestowed by the Party and people and the expectations of all servicemen and women and spare no effort in their work. Senior officers, as the backbone of the campaign to build a strong army, should be loyal and obedient to the Party, be good and smart at combat and endeavor to reform, Xi said.

They should be efficient in commanding their forces, strict in discipline and set an example by performing their duty with spirit and diligence, he said. The armed forces should improve political education and combat training and push forwards all projects of the 13th five-year plan of military development, he said.

Military reform projects should not be delayed and the armed forces should be placed under strict discipline.

The armed forces are also urged to plan future work according to the guidelines of the 19th CPC National Congress.

President Radev: The Decision for New Fighters, Modernisation of the Army Is in the Hands of the Prime Minister

in EUROPE/PRESS RELEASE/REGIONS by

“The decision for buying new fighters and the comprehensive modernization of the army is in the hands of the Prime Minister. As I have already said, the responsibility is also his”, President Rumen Radev told journalists. Taking a question whether he will discuss the key issues related to the modernization of the army with the PM, Radev said he had hoped the Prime Minister to curb his supporters in Parliament, but that had not happened. “To judge by all actions of GERB, I can see that either the Prime Minister is losing control or else he is encouraging his party in its actions, so that I no longer see any sense in such a meeting”, the Head of State said. Asked whether there is some tension between GERB and the President, Radev answered that such a “battle” is under way, although the party does not dare to declare it, that is if they want a conflict – they will get it. What concerns him more is not such a conflict, but all processes under way in the country, and that against the backdrop of the forthcoming Presidency of the EU. Radev added that he is also concerned with the manner in which this EU Presidency is regarded, with what Bulgaria will gain from it, rather than whether it will be successful or not, for the European practice is to “get a pat on the back”. Radev thinks the incumbents regard this Presidency as some omerta which will guarantee peace at home and legitimacy abroad.
