Palestinian Authority Applies for Entry Into Eight International Treaties at UN

in MIDLE EAST by

Last week, the Palestinian Authority presented official requests to join eight international treaties, including the UN International Convention against Apartheid in Sport and the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. Israeli Ambassador to the UN Danny Danon said that the Palestinian Authority’s latest attempt to raise its status within the international community and de-legitimize Israel is part of the Palestinian violations of the obligations under the Oslo peace accords of 1993 with Israel. Membership in organizations such as these would provide the Palestinians with new opportunities to challenge Israel’s legitimacy and discredit the Jewish state on global spaces.

In April 2014, the PA requested accession to 15 international treaties and the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon accepted the entry of the Palestinians into 10 of the treaties as non-state members. Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas, after the official recognition of President Donald Trump of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, has promised to request entry into 22 international treaties, including 18 of the UN. The Palestinians have announced on several occasions that they have abandoned US-led peace negotiations, while attempting to obtain full UN membership, call for further Security Council resolutions (UNSC) and prosecute Israel to the Criminal International Tribunal (ICC).

in MIDLE EAST/POLITICS by

The leaders of the EU and Turkey will meet on March 26 at the Evksinograd residence in Varna, Bulgaria to discuss many issued as the Customs Union agreement, requirements of a signed migrant deal, the fight against terrorism and Turkey’s accession to the bloc. President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan will meet European Council President Donald Tusk, European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker and Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borissov. The meeting will build on the previous leaders’ meeting that took place on May 25, 2017. On the Customs Union issue, the council has not given the required mandate to the European Commission to launch technical talks with Turkey because there is not the consensus of all members, Germany primarily. The Customs Union covers all industrial goods, but does not address agriculture (except processed agricultural products), services or public procurement right now.

In the meeting will be also discussed the implementation of the migrant deal. The migrant deal envisages a one-for-one formula under which failed asylum seekers in Europe are returned to Turkey while Syrian refugees are resettled in EU states in a quota system. Turkey was promised to be given the full amount of six billion euros in two parts. The first part, 3 billion euros, is to be fulfilled by 2018 and the European Commission said it will grant another 3 billion euros ($3.7 billion).  Furthermore, in Varna, the Turkish leader will reiterate Turkey’s candidacy for full membership to the bloc.

Taylor Force Act signed into law as part of massive spending bill

in MIDLE EAST by

The PLO has criticized Congress for the approval of the Taylor Force Act, a law that threatens to freeze State Department funds from the Palestinian Authority, unless it ceases to compensate terrorists and families of terrorists convicted in the courts Israeli. However, the law makes it possible to keep aid for the AP assigned to security cooperation and some humanitarian aid.

The PLO envoy to Washington, Husam Zomlot, argued that the US move is motivated by political interests and seriously harms the prospects for peace in the Middle East. According to Zomlot, the bill punishes the Palestinian Authority, which is the only agency committed to peace and nonviolence, and undermines the American-Palestinian bilateral relationship.

No positive response from Pakistan to terrorism

in MIDLE EAST by

During the “Progress on Peace and Stability in Afghanistan” at the US Institute of Peace, Afghan National Security Adviser Mohammad Hanif Atmar says the response from the Pakistan to terrorism has been mixed. He said that the consensus on how to fight the terrorists has broken slightly. Atmar added that there are nations in the region that draw a distinction between good and bad terrorists. Furthermore, the region actors all agreed to have state-to-state relations for counter terrorism, but there are some stat who look at state to non-state actors relations for counter-terrorism, like some that say they work with the Taliban against Daesh or against the ISIS. According to Atmar, this is unethical and self-defeating in terms of policy. Atmar said Afghanistan faces threat from a nexus of violent extremism, transnational criminalized networks and state sponsorship of terrorists, but it’s not just the Taliban and the Haqqani network that they are fighting. There is an increase of foreign fighters associated with at least three categories of terrorist networks. The global terrorist networks such as Al Qaeda, Daehs and ISIS-K. The regional terrorists such as IMU from Central Asia and China, and Pakistani terrorists such as Lashkar-e-Taiba, Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan and Jaish-e-Mohammed.

The National Iranian American Council criticizes Bolton pick at Trump’s war gabinet

in MIDLE EAST by

The National Iranian American Council (NIAC) on Friday slammed US President Donald Trump’s appointment of John Bolton as National Security Advisor warning that “with Bolton pick, Trump is assembling an Iran war cabinet”. “Donald Trump may have just effectively declared war on Iran. With the appointment of John Bolton, and nomination of Mike Pompeo at State, Trump is clearly putting together a war cabinet. As the world awaits Trump’s May 12 decision as to whether he will abandon the Iran nuclear deal, all of the signs now point to a decision to move to war footing”, president of the National Iranian American Council, Trita Parsi, declared. “Bolton is an unhinged advocate for waging World War III. He has explicitly called for bombing Iran for the past ten years. Bolton’s first order of business will be to convince Trump to exit the Iran nuclear deal and lay the groundwork for the war he has urged over the past decade. Additionally, he has called for supporting the Mujahedin-e Khalq (MEK) terrorist organization and other separatist groups inside of Iran”, he pointed out.

After his appointment, John Bolton tried to distance himself from his past statements. He added: “The important thing is what the President says and the advice I give him, not the past”.
