Bouteflika receives Secretary of the Security Council of the Russian Federation

The President of the Republic, Abdelaziz Bouteflika, received Tuesday in Algiers the Secretary of the Security Council of the Russian Federation, Nikolai Patrushev, visiting Algeria. Indeed, the hearing took place in the presence of the General of Army Corps, Ahmed Gaïd Salah, Deputy Minister of National Defense, Chief of Staff of the National People’s Army (ANP) and the Minister of Defense and the Foreign Affairs, Abdelkader Messahel.On the other hand, Patrushev began his two-day visit to Algeria on Tuesday at the head of a strong delegation of senior officials representing the various Russian institutions.

Emmanuel Macron to begin two-day state visit to Tunisia Wednesday

French President Emmanuel Macron will make a state visit to Tunisia on Wednesday (January 31) and Thursday (February 1), at the invitation of his counterpart Beji Caïd Essebsi. This is his first trip to Tunisia since he took office in May 2017.The French President, who will be accompanied by many personalities, ministers, parliamentarians, officials of the French Development Agency (AFD), academics and businessmen, will deliver a message of encouragement to the process of economic and democratic transition in Tunisia, said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. During this visit, Macron will have meetings with President Beji Caïd Essebsi, Prime Minister Youssef Chahed and Speaker of the House of People’s Representatives (HPR) Mohamed Ennaceur. Defense, security, economy, education, higher education, culture and the situation in the region, especially in Libya are all topics that will be discussed during this visit, said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. A series of co-operation agreements will also be signed between the two countries.

Parliament: freedoms, police handling of protests at heart of Lotfi Brahem’s hearing

The issue of freedoms and police handling of protests were at heart of Interior Minister Lotfi Brahem’s hearing by the Parliamentary Security and Defence Committee on Monday. Talking about recent reports about a police campaign against Tunisian and foreign journalists, Lotfi Brahem said the Interior Ministry is always open to dialogue with human rights organizations as well as with the National Union of Tunisian Journalists. On issues relating to individual freedoms, some MPs proposed the review or even the amendment of the travel ban procedure, which, according to the Minister of the Interior, had affected more than 29,000 people in 2017. This procedure imposes a travel ban on all people who may join conflict zones. Brahem said the ministry has set up a committee to study the cases of people banned from traveling and to make the necessary amendments to the laws and procedures considered unconstitutional after the adoption of the Constitution.Regarding the use of force to disperse protests, Brahem did not deny the use of force by security officers in some protests. “However, he said, the use of force has always been within the law”.

Many suspected terrorists killed, sophisticated arms destroyed in Sambisa forest

Troops of the Nigerian Army has neutralised seven remnants of the Boko Haram terrorists in the Sambisa forest and Northern Borno on Friday in an operation supported by the Air Force. According to a statement by Sani Usman, the Director of Army Public Relations, troops also destroyed 11 gun trucks and 12 Hilux vehicles during the operation.

For his part, El Airi said that Saudi Arabia attaches great importance to Saudi investments in Tunisia, adding that many Saudi projects have been carried out in Tunisia since the 1970s. He stressed that Saudi businessmen aspire to make new investments in Tunisia.

Six individuals arrested because of affiliation to terrorist organization

The Interior Ministry reported the arrest of six individuals in the delegation of Sidi Ali Ben Aoun, governorate of Sidi Bouzid for incitement to terrorism. Their age is between 21 and 27 years old, and these individuals are suspected of belonging to a “takfirist” cell of 9 members.The suspects pledged allegiance to the terrorist organization “Daesh” and confessed their continued contact with terrorist elements in Libya and Syria. They held secret meetings in a mosque in the area to encourage young people to join terrorist groups in conflict zones.

The kidnappers of the Sudanese migrants were arrested

The Security Forces led by Al-Bunyan al-Marsous arrested in Sirte the kidnappers of the Sudanese migrants, who were in videos that have gone viral in Libya over the last days. The first video showed a man in extreme pain brunt with hot silicon, while the second one consisted of ten migrants lashed repeatedly on their backs.  Al-Bunyan al-Marsous said that the kidnappers were five Libyans and one man from Palestine, adding that the victims were transferred to Ibn Sina hospital in Sirte. The Sudanese Foreign Minister met the Libyan one to protest the videos showed the tortures.

Anan charged with violations and crimes

Mahmoud Refaat, the spokesman of Anan’s campaign said that the former military chief has been arrested. In fact two days after his announcement of his presidential bid in the upcoming elections, Safi Anan has been accused of inciting against the army and forgery and he is being interrogated by the military prosecution. In an audio statement an army spokesman said that Anan announced his candidacy without getting consent from the armed forces and had forged official documents stating that his service with the military had ended. The military has not yet issued an official confirmation of his arrest. The army’s statement ends the Anan’s candidacy.
