Switzerland ‘independently’ investigating legal status of Mubarak assets in Swiss banks: Embassy

Investigations into former Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak’s frozen assets in Swiss banks are being conducted “independently” in both Switzerland and Egypt, the Swiss embassy in Cairo said in an official statement on Wednesday.The embassy said that joint judicial cooperation on the case is ongoing between Egypt and Switzerland to determine whether the funds were illegally obtained, and that no final decision has been made regarding whether the funds will be returned to Egypt.Based on initial estimates by the Swiss government, Mubarak’s total assets in Swiss banks amount to CHF 650 million ($698 million).Mubarak and his two sons were found guilty of embezzling EGP 125 million in public funds originally allocated for the upkeep of presidential buildings, and were sentenced to three years in prison.Mubarak is the first Egyptian president to stand trial and be convicted of corruption.

Sisi signs nine MoUs in economic fields during Vietnam visit

Egypt has signed nine memorandums of understanding with Vietnam in various economic fields. Presidential spokesman Alaa Youssef said the memos were signed during President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi’s visit to Vietnam on Wednesday, where he met with Vietnam’s President Tran Dai Quang. The MoUs included references to establishing ports and maritime trade.According to Youssef’s statement, Quang hailed Egypt’s leadership and achievements over the past three years in restoring security and stability, adding that El-Sisi’s visit to Vietnam will give a major push to bilateral cooperation.His visit was the first such by an Egyptian president to Vietnam since 1963.

Sisi signs three deals with China’s president at BRICS summit

Egypt’s president Abdel Fattah El-Sisi held talks with his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping on Tuesday, signing three agreements on security, transport and satellite technology.The two leaders met on the sidelines of the BRICS summit in the Chinese city of Xiamen, Egypt’s state-run news agency MENA reported.According to Alaa Youssef, Egyptian presidential spokesperson, El-Sisi signed two agreements and one memorandum of understandin regarding the creation of a new electric train service in Egypt.The two ministries are already engaged in cooperation on security issues, having signed a technical cooperation deal in September 2016 relating to security and counter-terrorism operations. Egypt is battling a terrorist insurgency based in North Sinai, while China is engaged in counter-terrorist operations in its restive northwestern province of Xinjiang.

Several illegal migrants shelter centers shut down in Libya

The Head of the Illegal Immigration Fight Center, Mohammed Besher, ordered Tuesday the shutdown of several migrants shelter centers in Tripoli, Sorman, Al-Khums, and Al-Gala. The order says the centers will be shut down because they are located in residential areas that are not prepared to host such centers, which have been built randomly and at odds with human rights conditions.According to the order, most of the closed shelter centers don’t comply with the legal standards of such buildings and are not built for this purpose – illegal immigration shelter centers, adding that they are owned by persons as farms and big stores, not special buildings for the ministry of the interior.Doctors Without Borders urged last Friday Libya to end the arbitrary arrests of illegal migrants and asylum seekers.

Intelligence official: ISIS receives local and international support

ISIS fugitives in Libya are receiving national and international support, Chief of Military Intelligence of Al-Bonyan Al-Masrous Operation, Brig. Gen Mohammed Ganaidi, has revealed, adding that the military vehicles that the radical group is using around Sirte now had been imported from a Gulf state. Speaking to Alnabaa TV on Monday, Ganaidi said Dignity Operation had imported military vehicles from the United Arab Emirates, but they ended up in the hands of ISIS extremists. Ganaidi estimated that there are about 300 ISIS militants moving freely in south Sirte valleys and in the southern region, saying their forces are ready to confront ISIS or Dignity Operation militias if they come to Sirte.

Kuwait denies PC statement that its embassy in Tripoli will reopen

Kuwaiti deputy foreign minister Khalid Al-Jarallah has refuted a report from the Presidency Council (PC) that Kuwait is planning to reopen its embassy in Tripoli. Three days ago, in a statement about talks between PC head Faiez Serraj and visiting Kuwaiti ambassador Mubarak Al-Adwani on Thursday, the Presidency Council said on its Facebook page that the ambassador had “praised” the security situation in the capital and said that the embassy would be reopening. Responding to it, Jarallah told the local Kuwaiti newspaper Al-Jarida that no date had been set to reopen the embassy and that the reason Adwani had gone to Tripoli was to inspect the embassy buildings and check up on the situation in the city.In his meeting with Serraj, Jarallah added, the ambassador had simply discussed the situation in Libya.

Arab Media: ISIS after safe haven in North Africa

‘The Syrian government forces’ advances have left a few options for ISIS and it seems that ISIS can just find hideouts in the three regions of Derna, Benghazi and Cert in Libya’, al-Qods al-Arabi newspaper wrote in an analysis on Sunday. ‘They also use Libya as a training center for training and equipping suicide bombers, specially those who come from Tunisia,’ it added.The newspaper also referred to al-Qaeda Leader Mokhtar Belmokhtar’s presence in Libya, and said he is the main obstacle to ISIS’s advance in Southern Libya, Niger and Northern Mali unless the ISIS works out an agreement with him for alliance.For more than two years, fighters from the ISIS have exploited civil war chaos in Libya to establish control over large stretches of the coastline and pockets of territory elsewhere.

Tripoli: French Foreign Minister pressures Libyan conflicting parties to support Paris

The Libyan Foreign Minister of the UN-proposed government, Mohammed Sayala, held a joint conference with his French counterpart, Jean-Yves Le Drian, on Monday in Tripoli.The French FM reiterated his country’s support for finding a peaceful solution by contacting with all the Libyan conflicting parties.”France is one of the first countries to urge for stability in Libya and that was included in the Paris joint declaration that said the Libyan crisis must end by amending the political agreement and then holding elections in the country” he added. Also, in Tripoli, Le Drian met with the Head of the Presidential Council, Fayez Al-Sirraj, who discussed practical support for the Libyan Coast Guard and Presidential Guard.Al-Sirraj welcomed the French FM’s proposal to hold a French-Libyan economic forum in Tripoli before the end of 2017 and he welcomed that announcement of providing one million euros by France to the Stability Fund of the UN to support service projects in Libya.

El-Sisi holds talks with Putin on sidelines of BRICS summit in China

Egypt’s president Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi met with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin on Monday, on the sidelines of the BRICS summit in the Chinese city of Xiamen, state-run news agency MENA reported.The meeting included talks on several bilateral and international topics of a common interest. According to the presidency spokesperson Alaa Youssef, Putin praised the increase in trade between the two countries, as well as the bilateral coordination on regional and international issues. Meanwhile, El-Sisi invited Putin to attend a celebration at the site of the Dabaa nuclear-power station, which Egypt is planning to build with Russian assistance. El-Sisi is also expected to holding bilateral meetings with his Chinese and Indian counterparts during the three-day summit, as well as meeting with a number of large Chinese companies investing in Egypt.Earlier today, Sisi delivered a speech before the BRICS Business Forum, where he spoke of Egypt’s economic reform program, and related reforms of the subsidy system and social security system.

Italian ambassador to return to Cairo on 14 September: Italian foreign minister

Italy’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Angelino Alfano announced on Monday that the Italian ambassador to Egypt, Giampaolo Cantini, will take up his position in Cairo on 14 September, state-run news agency MENA reported. Egypt’s ambassador to Italy, Hesham Badr, will resume his role in Rome on the same date.Alfano made the announcement during a session of the foreign affairs committee at the Italian parliament, according to Italy’s AGI new agency: “Egypt is an inextricable partner of Italy, and also Italy is an inextricable partner of Egypt”, said Alfano. “Therefore, it is impossible for our countries not to have high-level political and diplomatic dialogue”. Alfano also said that sending Cantini to Cairo is intended to consolidate the political and ethical obligations of the Italian government regarding the search for the truth about the murder of Italian researcher Guilio Regeni.
