Annual report of “Freedom House”: Algeria “is not a free country”

The ONG states that this year is the eleventh consecutive year in which the global level of freedom in the world is dropping, 37% of the world population would not be free, while 24% live in partially free states. Countries where democracy is complete would be only 39%. Algeria is one of the countries that this organization considers a “non-free country”. Freedom House, a non-governmental organization funded by the US government, includes Algeria in its list of 49 countries judged as not free in its 2018 ranking.This list includes all countries where democracy is partially or totally suppressed. Tunisia is the only country considered free in the Arab world with Morocco with a score of 35/100. According to this organization, Algeria gets a score of 6 for political freedoms and 5 for civil liberties belonging to the same category as Jordan, Venezuela or Gabon.

Albanian will not be the second language in Macedonia

Gjorge Ivanov, Macedonian President, stated he will not sign the law passed Thursday in Parliament aimed at making Albanian the second official language in Macedonia. A draft law making the Albanian the country’s second official language was voted in the Macedonian Parliament with 69 votes pro. The previous law, created by a 2001 peace agreement, ensured the official use of the Albanian language in the communities where the minority is more than 20% of the population. According to Ivanov, the new law is against the Macedonian Constitution, adding that “the co-existence in Macedonia is possible if we will not adopt laws that only go in favor of the Albanians”.

Clash kills 7 Taliban, 2 policeman

Seven Taliban insurgents and two policemen were killed and nine rebels and one policeman were wounded during a clash in the Giru district of southern Ghazni province, an official said on Wednesday. Lal Mohammad, a resident of the locality, said the clash broke continued for several hours. Police chief Brig. Gen. Mohammad Zaman said the clash erupted after militants stormed security check-posts in the district late on Tuesday night. The security forces also seized several weapons belonging the assailants. There has been no word from the Taliban in this regard.

FAO, Agriculture Development Project

The United States Agency for International Development (USAID), in partnership with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) have launched the Promoting Value Chains–West project, a statement from the USAID said on Tuesday. The project will increase the ability of producers and it will help the link between farmers to markets, both domestic and international. This will promote inclusive growth and job creation in the agricultural sector. Improving agricultural value chains would provide great potential for economic growth. The three-year project will support sustainable agribusiness and livestock development by increasing wheat productivity, improving production and profitability of high value crops, enhancing technology utilization in the livestock industry. Project beneficiaries would include small and medium enterprises (SMEs), input suppliers, private service providers, traders, millers and processors, and producer groups.

China and Russia’s absence looms over Canada meeting on how to pressure North Korea

Foreign Ministers from around 20 nations will meet on Tuesday to discuss how to curb North Korea’s nuclear ambitions through diplomatic and financial pressure, but China and Russia will be absent. The Vancouver meeting, co-hosted by Canada and the United States, primarily groups those Nations that sent troops to the Korean war of 1950-53, when China fought alongside the North. China and Russia both criticised ministerial meeting. Moscow, in one side, considers meeting to be destructive and refutes false reports about its support for the event; chineeforeign ministry spokesman Lu Kang, in the other side, said “Holding this kind of meeting that doesn’t include important parties to the Korean peninsula nuclear issue actually cannot help in advancing an appropriate resolution to the issue”. However China and Russia will be fully briefed on the conclusions, the State Department’s director of american policy planning, Brian Hook, said.

DPRK slams ROK president for praising US roles in inter-Korean talks

The official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) strongly criticized South Korean President Moon Jae-in for “thanking” US President Donald Trump for playing a role in bringing Pyongyang to the inter-Korean talks through maximum pressure and sanctions, as well as his call for “denuclearization” of the DPRK as the final goal of the talks. North Korea called these “ill-boding remarks chilling the atmosphere for reconciliation.” and warned of possible changes of its intention to participate in the Olympics, saying,”Everything is now at the beginning. The South Korean authorities had better ponder over what unfavorable results may be prompted by their impolite behavior”. The KCNA also accused South Korea of letting the United States send another nuclear aircraft carrier, Stennis, to the West Pacific during the Peyongchang Olympics, despite its agreement with Washington to postpone joint military drills during the games.

Joint action between Bulgaria and Montenegro needed for regional security

During the meeting between Montenegrin Defense Minister Bošković and Bulgarian Defense Minister Karakachanov, the importance of a joint action between the two states to ensure regional security was discussed. As a member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), according to Karakachanov, Montenegro plays a leading role in designing long-term peace and stability in the Western Balkans. Bošković has also stressed that Montenegro will actively support further integration of Western Balkan countries into NATO as well as contribute to the collective security system.

Serbia and Montenegro to be EU members by the end of 2025

By the end of 2025, Montenegro and Serbia could become full members of the European Union. By 2019, they are supposed to meet the criteria of the rule of law, thus demonstrating a serious commitment to face reform challenges. By 2023, negotiations are expected to be concluded with Montenegro and expected to be signed in 2024, thus entering into force by 2025. The European Union has urgently invited all Balkan states supposed to access the EU to settle bilateral disputes.

Montenegro and Croatia are awaiting heavy negotiations

The situation between Croatia and Montenegro regarding the maritime border of the Prevlaka peninsula is getting tense. Because of security reasons, Montenegro’s interest in the peninsula of Prevlaka is far more evident than Croatia’s. Indeed, the control over the border is a matter of security: the peninsula is located at the entrance of the Bay of Kotor, near the border with Montenegro. Zagreb and Podgorica are currently undergoing serious negotiations.

Agreement on friendship, good neighborhood and cooperation between Macedonia and Bulgaria.
NEWS: Parliament voted a draft law on the ratification of the Agreement on friendship, good neighborhood, and cooperation between the Republic of Macedonia and the Republic of Bulgaria. 61 were the deputies who voted in favor, with only one abstention. Minister of Foreign Affairs Nikola Dimitrov has not hidden that difficult and delicates issues between the two countries cannot be easily negotiated so much that neither Macedonia nor Bulgaria are fully satisfied by the text of the treaty. “The Treaty covers our interests in Bulgaria. This is a symbolic day because Bulgaria has recognized Macedonia’s independence, being the first nation to do so. It is pivotal that before the agreement’s ratification in practice we are seeing a substantial shift in our relations”, stated the Minister. Dimitrov emphasized the importance of the treaty as the two sides were encouraged to leave the trenches and make society safer. The friendship treaty was signed on 1 August 2017 by the premier of the two countries Zoran Zaev and Boyko Borissov. The agreement aims to strengthen the friendly relations of the countries by promoting good neighborly bonds, establishing reciprocal relations in accordance with international law. The friendship treaty between Macedonia and Bulgaria, as reported by MIA, is the result of a negotiation process that has lasted for five years by the working groups of the foreign ministries of the two countries, and is considered an update of the 1990 agreement.
