EU recommends Ukraine accelerate implementation of reforms

in EUROPE/PRESS RELEASE/REGIONS by

The European Union says that the evaluation of Ukrainian reforms shows considerable progress but Ukraine needs to accelerate their implementation to reap full benefits, according to an EU report”. A report produced by the European External Action Service and the European Commission highlights that Ukraine has pursued the implementation of a number of reforms identified in its Association Agenda in 2017, with several significant successes. Progress in other areas has been less forthcoming, with accelerated implementation needed to bring about real change for the Ukrainian people”, the European Commission said in a statement. “Since last year’s report, we have seen a number of long-awaited achievements. Our Association Agreement entered into force, and Ukrainian citizens were granted visa-free travel for short stay visits to the Schengen area. We now expect the implementation of reforms to be accelerated so that Ukrainian citizens can fully reap the benefits of our partnership. Ukraine can count on the European Union’s continued support in order to make this possible”, the statement quoted High Representative/Vice-President Federica Mogherini, as saying.

House Dems introduce impeachment articles against Trump

in AMERICAS/PRESS RELEASE/REGIONS by

A half-dozen Democrats on Wednesday introduced articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump, accusing him of obstruction of justice and other offenses, in a long-shot effort that stands little chance in the Republican-led House. Indeed, the large majority of Democrats seem intent on having nothing to do with the effort either as lawmakers await the results of special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into ties between the Trump campaign and Russia. Democratic leaders have argued that the impeachment campaign riles up Trump’s GOP base, a critical bloc in next year’s midterm elections. The five articles accused the president of obstruction of justice related to the FBI investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election, undermining the independence of the federal judiciary and other offenses. “We have taken this action because of great concerns for the country and our Constitution and our national security and our democracy”, Rep. Steve Cohen, D-Tenn., said at a news conference to announce the effort.

Earthquake death toll in Iran rises to 387, 6603 injured

in ASIA/PRESS RELEASE/REGIONS by

On Sunday night a devastating 7.3 magnitude earthquake struck the Iraq-Iran border about 64 miles (103km) Southeast of the city of Sulaymaniyah. The earthquake was felt across large parts of Iran, including Kermanshah, Kurdistan, Ilam, West Azerbaijan and East Azerbaijan provinces. It has claimed a large number of victims: about 400 people dead and more than 6600 injured, but the number of fatalities is feared to rise. The earthquake has created extremely difficult conditions: the electricity was cut off in several Iranian and Iraqi cities, and fears of aftershocks sent thousands of people in both countries out onto the streets and parks in cold weather and rescuers worked through the night to find people trapped in collapsed buildings, but there are still people under the rubble. Iranian President Hassan Rouhani assigned the vice president on Monday to oversee a national disaster response to the last night’s powerful earthquake and all administrative, military, public and non-governmental organizations were mobilized to handle the disaster. Following the death toll in Kermanshah province, the deputy governor announced three days of public mourning in the whole province. Also, leader of Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Khamenei called in a message for taking immediate measures to assist those affected by the earthquake, including a rapid mobilization of the relevant government organs to provide medical treatment for the injured. 20 helicopters from Iran Army Aviation, 136 ambulances, and 28 ambulance buses were also deployed to earthquake-affected areas. Four field hospitals have also been set up in the area.

Trump says he trusts Putin’s denials of election meddling

in AMERICAS/PRESS RELEASE/REGIONS by

U.S. President Donald Trump said he believed President Vladimir Putin when he denied accusations that Russia meddled in last year’s U.S. election after the two met briefly at a summit in Vietnam on Saturday and agreed a statement on Syria. Trump, who has called allegations of campaign collusion with Moscow a hoax, has faced questions from Democrats about the matter since he took office. A special counsel, Robert Mueller, is conducting a probe that has led to charges against Trump’s former campaign manager Paul Manafort and his associate Rick Gates. U.S. intelligence agencies have also concluded Russians interfered in the election to tip the election in Trump’s favor through hacking and releasing emails to embarrass Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton and spreading social media propaganda.
