Federal Security Service: Millions of cyber attacks against Russian government foiled annually

Tens of millions of cyber attacks against Russian government websites are foiled annually nationwide, Federal Security Service (FSB) Chief Alexander Bortnikov told Rossiyskaya Gazeta daily on Tuesday. “As a whole, tens of millions of deliberate attacks on official websites and IT systems of state bodies, including the official website of the Russian president, are thwarted annually. A total of 358 individuals have been convicted since 2012 for crimes committed using computer technologies”, the FSB chief said. Over the past few years, Russia has raised its information security to a qualitatively new level, Bortnikov said. “Since 2013, the state system of exposing, preventing and eliminating the consequences of computer attacks on Russia’s information resources (abbreviated as GosSOPKA) has been consistently building up its potential with the FSB’s leading role”, he said.

Vladimir Putin has told a forum of his supporters that he sees the main objectives of his new presidential program as maintaining Russia’s freedom, social stability and leading place among world nations. Speaking at the Tuesday session of the “Forum of Actions” organized by the All-Russian Popular Front movement incumbent president Vladimir Putin said that Russia had to fulfill the principal historical tasks of the moment, such as population growth, the creation of a new economy and development of its the Arctic and the Far East regions. Putin also emphasized the importance of keeping up with the ongoing revolution in production technologies, healthcare, and education. “Shielding ourselves from these international tendencies or trying to keep up with someone is definitely not our choice, it cannot be our choice”, he said, adding that Russia had all opportunities to restore the spheres of an economy where it used to be a world leader.

CIA Helped Russia Foil Terror Plot, Kremlin Thanks Trump

The CIA reportedly tipped off Russian security forces about an impending terror attack planned for St. Petersburg last weekend, President Vladimir Putin revealed in a thank you call to U.S. President Donald Trump on Sunday.

Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) announced on Friday that it detained seven suspected members of an Islamic State (IS) sleeper cell preparing a suicide attack in St. Petersburg the next day. IS is a terrorist organization banned in Russia. “The information received from the CIA was enough to locate and detain the criminals,” the Kremlin said in an English-language statement.

The CIA reportedly provided advanced warning of the plan to set off explosions at the Kazansky Cathedral and other public places in St. Petersburg.

In its readout of the phone call, the White House said “Russian authorities were able to capture the terrorists just prior to an attack that could have killed large numbers of people.”

Eighth session of Tunisian-Algerian Political Consultation Committee meets

The exchange of views between Tunisia and Algeria on several issues were at the heart of the meeting of the 8th session of the Tunisian-Algerian Political Consultation Committee held on Monday in Tunis.The meeting was co-chaired by Foreign Minister Khemaies Jhinaoui and his Algerian counterpart Abdelkader Messahel.The Algerian minister said relations between Tunisia and Algeria in the economic field have seen record figures in terms of volume of trade and tourism in the previous year.Indeed, the number of Algerian tourists visiting Tunisia has reached more than two million, he said, while commending the privileged relations between the two countries in terms of security, counter-terrorism and border security.The meeting was an opportunity to discuss the development of the excellent bilateral relations and ways to strengthen them and identify other prospects for co-operation in all areas in the interest of the two countries.

Ukraine to continue operations at JCCC but to withdraw monitors from occupied Donbas

The Ukrainian side will continue its work at the Joint Centre for Control and Coordination of Ceasefire in Donbas, but will have to withdraw its monitors from the occupied territory, deputy spokesman for Ukraine’s Armed Forces Yuzef Venskovych said.

The official noted that the Russian Federation’s statements about the alleged disrespectful attitude of Ukrainian servicemen toward their Russian counterparts at the JCCC are untrue: “These insinuations do not correspond to reality, those on the allegedly disrespectful attitude, and so on.” Venskovych has stressed the fact that the Ukrainian side continues and will continue to fulfill its responsibilities in accordance with the responsibilities assigned to JCCC in the framework of the implementation of Minsk agreements. “Meanwhile, this will certainly complicate the activities of the Joint Centre, since there will be no representatives on the other side if they withdraw their military personnel … If Russian officers withdraw from the JCCC, the Ukrainian Armed Forces are forced to pull back from the occupied territories its monitors who were acting there on behalf of the JCCC to the territory controlled by Ukraine due to the fact that their safety will not be ensured,” said Venskovych.

Moldovа ratifies readmission deal with Ukraine

“The document establishes the principles and norms for regulating the procedure for the readmission of persons who are staying on the territory of Ukraine and Moldova, having violated the entry/exit regime. The agreement also defines the terms of these persons’ stay in both countries,” the report said. The deal also provides for a mechanism for interaction of the parties when implementing the readmission procedure. As UNIAN reported earlier, on October 6, 2017, Ukrainian Prime Minister Volodymyr Groysman and his Moldovan counterpart Pavel Filip signed an agreement between the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine and the Moldovan government on readmission and the relevant implementation protocol. Moreover, they signed off an agreement on the joint control over the movement of persons, vehicles, goods, and objects via joint checkpoints at the Ukrainian-Moldovan state border.

 

Klimkin, UN Secretary-General discuss deployment of UN peacekeepers in Donbas

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Pavlo Klimkin during a meeting with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in New York focused on the prospects for a UN peacekeeping mission in Donbas.

The spokesman for Ukraine’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations Oleh Nikolenko said this to an Ukrinform correspondent. “Pavlo Klimkin discussed with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres the prospects for the introduction of a UN peacekeeping mission in the east of Ukraine, protection of human rights in the temporarily occupied Crimea, humanitarian cooperation, including the release of Ukrainian political prisoners and hostages from Russian captivity”, the Ukrainian diplomat said. He also said that the head of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry handed over to the UN secretary-general an open letter on behalf of the association of relatives of political prisoners of the Kremlin, and the human rights and public organizations of Ukraine.

All parties were invited but only twenty asked and spoke.After the words of the President of Isie, the representatives of the Assembly, the Government and the Presidency of the Republic formulated the position of their representatives, before giving the floor to the parties. Nahdhaoui MP Habib Khedher spoke on behalf of the PRA to indicate that the Assembly had fulfilled its legislative commitments with regard to the municipal elections and that it is now focusing on the finalization of the draft law on the Code of Local Government. Speaking on behalf of the government, the Minister Mehdi Ben Gharbia said that the government has no preferential date to propose and that it applied to facilitate the task to Isie, whatever the date chosen by the latter, which is the prerogative. Senior government advisers and military officers warned Beijing on Saturday that the escalation of the war of words between US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un indicates that China must remain on high alert for war on the Korean peninsula, as the risk of conflict has never been greater. “North Korea is a time bomb”, detailed China’s executive-level State Council cabinet advisor Shi Yinhong during a Beijing conference on the Korean crisis. “We can only delay the explosion, hoping that by delaying it, a time will come to remove the detonator”, said Shi, a Renmin University international relations professor, cited by the South China Morning Post (SCMP).  Russian military officers deliver 1.3-tonne batch of humanitarian aid in Aleppo region

Russian officers have delivered a 1.3-tonne batch of humanitarian aid to residents of Qasir al-Ward village in Syria’s Aleppo province in the last 24 hours, the Russian center for the reconciliation of opposing sides in Syria said on Saturday.”Over the last 24 hours, the Russian Centre for the reconciliation of opposing sides has delivered a 1.3-tonne humanitarian consignment to residents of the settlement of Qasir al-Ward, Aleppo province. Citizens received 300 food kits of rice, canned meat, and sugar,” the center said. Besides, 38 Syrians have returned to their homes in the last 24 hours, among them were 15 refugees in the Aleppo province and 23 in Homs province. Ten residents in the settlement of al-Huseiniyah, Deir Ez-Zor province, were given medical treatment. Ceasefire agreements were signed with the settlements of Ayn Abu Sirah and Tell Dakhiriyet al-Sayah, Aleppo province. The Syrian government alongside Russian Reconciliation Centre and UN office in Damascus “continue searching for an opportunity to provide humanitarian assistance to people in the al-Rukban camp”.
