UN: All delegations confirm participation in Geneva round of Intra-Syrian talks.

All delegations that took part in the previous round of intra-Syrian talks in Geneva have confirmed their participation in the upcoming round due to begin on March 23, UN spokesperson in Geneva Alessandra Vellucci said on Tuesday. According to Vellucci, United Nations Secretary General’s Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura will not be in Geneva on March 23, so bilateral meetings with the delegations will be conducted by his deputy, Ramzi Izz Eddin Ramzi. De Mistura will meet with the delegations on the following day.

Syrian UNHCR envoy: Israel aiding Al-Qaida-linked terrorists.

Israel is helping terrorist groups in Syria including al-Qaida splinter group al-Nusra, Syrian Ambassador to the United Nations Human Rights Council Hussam Edin Aala charged in Geneva on Monday as he condemned the Israeli Air Force strike last Friday against military targets in his country. After the military aggression by Israel inside Syrian land is a proof of the support Israel provides to terrorist groups. According to Syria this is an act that violate the charter of the United Nation, international law and UN Security Council resolutions. Israel defends itself by saying that the airstrike was necessary to stop the flow of weapons to Hezbollah. Anyway the UNHRC is expected to pass a resolution at the end of this week that echoes that calls. It does so at every session.

The kidnapping of two members of United Nation accompanied by 4 Congolese poses a big problem that urges everybody to react. The Belgium- by its Vice first Secretary of the Foreign Affairs, Didier Reynders- is making pressures in this way. In a statement, she asked the Congolese authorities to find as quickly as possible these missing person. This kidnapping rapresents, for Secretary Didier, an infringement of the efforts the international community is undertaking. For this reason, one Rapresentative of the United Nations made a tour to Kanaga last week, in order to have a better idea of the security situation of this part of RDC. He reaffirmed as well the determination of MONUSCO to regain peace and stability. The Belgium could’t avoid to evoke the Kamuina Nsapu phenomenon, which causes problems in Kasai since August 2016. It called back too that MONUSCO is undertaking a mission consisting in the insitution of the peace since December 2016. The most besieged cities are: Kananga, Tshimbulu, Luiza and Kabeya.

Nasrallah says UN a weak organization, calls for fair taxes and proportional law.

Secretary General of Hezbollah, Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, said on Saturday during an event celebrating the birth of Fatima Al Zahra the daughter of Prophet Mohammad, that the United Nations is a weak organization and cannot be relied on to support rightful causes.  Nasrallah addressed gatherers through a screen in a speech which also touched on the political and economic situations in Lebanon. He hailed all women who continued to rise to the level of responsibility required of them during these difficult times in Lebanon and other countries, namely Palestine, Syria, Iraq, Yemen, Bahrain, Iran, Nigeria and Afghanistan

Syria to UN: Israel violated our territory

Syria on Friday sent two letters to the U.N because they argue that Israel is violating the international law. In letters sent to the UN Secretary General and the President of the Security Council, the Syrian Foreign Ministry said that four Israeli warplanes violated Syrian airspace and targeted a military site in the eastern countryside of Homs province. Syria calls on the UN Secretary General and the President of the UNSC to condemn this blatant Israeli aggression, to force Israel to stop supporting terrorism in Syria, to implement all UNSC resolutions on counter-terrorism. The Israel’s Prime Minister said that he is trying to do everithing to prevent the transfer of advanced weapons. This flagrant attack is part of the Zionist enemy’s persistent efforts to support the terrorist gangs of ISIS”, the army said

2016 worst year yet for Syria's children

At least 652 children were killed in Syria in 2016, making it the worst year yet for the country’s rising generation, the United Nations’ child relief agency said Monday. UNICEF said at least 255 children were killed in or near schools last year and 1.7 million youngsters are out of school. One of every three schools in Syria is unusable, some because militant groups occupy them. An additional 2.3 million Syrian children are refugees elsewhere in the Middle East.

Refugees from western Mosul exceed 76.000 since operations start

Refugees have been received at government camps since the start of offensives to recapture western Mosul from Islamic State have exceeded 76.000, according to the Iraqi government. The United Nations and Iraqi refugee bodies have warned that battles in western Mosul could displace at least 250.000 out of 750.000 estimated to be trapped under IS control in western Mosul. Upon the launch of operations to recapture eastern Mosul last October, the United Nations predicted 1.5 million refugees.

 

To UN aid chief Stephen O'Brien was 'denied passage' to Yemen's city of Taiz

A UN statement affirmed that UN aid chief Stephen O’Brien was ‘denied passage’ to Yemen’s city of Taiz at the final checkpoint before crossing the frontline, despite having received assurance of safe passage by all parties. The statement did not mention the name of the party that prevented the passage but the route from the north of Taiz is controlled by rebels and their allies. The government declared in a statement to SABA that the rebels stopped the UN chief “to prevent the truth about the situation in the city, including a soffocating siege from reaching the world”. Moreover this week the UN said nearly 1,500 children were recruited between March 2015 and January 2017 and Amnesty International accused Houthis of ‘actively recruiting boys as young as 15’.

Consultations on Egyptian draft resolution are not over

Egypt’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Ahmed Abu Zeid told Sky News Arabia on Thursday afternoon that the consultations on Egyptian draft resolution demanding Israel to halt its settlements activities whether in the United Nations in New York or the Arab League HQ in Cairo. The UN Security Council on Thursday postponed a vote on the draft resolution as President-elect Donald Trump weighed in and said the United States should veto the measure. The move to halt construction of illegal settlements in occupied Palestinian territories prompted immediate calls from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for the United States to use its veto power at the Security Council to block the resolution.

Nigerian Forces liberated at least 16 local governments occupied by Boko Haram

The United Nations on Tuesday confirmed that at least 16 local governments initially occupied by the Boko Haram in north-east Nigeria have been liberated by Nigerian forces. The immediate past UN Deputy Humanitarian Coordinator in Nigeria, Mohamed Safieldin, said he made on-the-spot assessment of some of the liberated local governments including Bama, Damboa, Monguno, Konduga, Dikwa, Gwoza, Pulka, and Banki .
Speaking to the New York correspondent of the News Agency of Nigeria, the official lamented the level of destruction on the communities by Boko Haram, saying there is real humanitarian crisis in the liberated areas.
