Donbass; interviene Alexander Hug, vice capo della missione OSCE

lo scorso 6 ottobre 2017 è intervenuto in una conferenza a Kiev il vice capo della missione speciale di monitoraggio dell’OSCE, Alexander Hug. L’OSCE è un’organizzazione regionale per la promozione della pace, del dialogo politico e della cooperazione in Europa.

In particolare Alexander Hug si è espresso in merito alla situazione nella regione del Donbass, al confine tra Russia e Ucraina. La missione dell’OSCE consiste nel monitoraggio della situazione di tregua, con l’invio di circa 500 civili non armati nella zona interessata. Il cessate il fuoco è stato pattuito tra le parti il 5 settembre scorso.

La decisione era arrivata in seguito alla situazione di violentissimi scontri, con l’utilizzo di armi pesanti, che si era creata ed intensificata nei mesi precedenti, con il numero dei civili coinvolti in costante crescita. Il patto è stato, però, ripetutamente interrotto nei giorni seguenti , con bombardamenti pesanti che si sono registrati nella periferia di Mariupol, una città nell’Ucraina sudorientale, nella notte del 7 settembre. Inoltre sono stati avvistati dei carrarmati nella zona che intercorre tra il confine ed i 15 km di distanza da rispettare.

Alexander Hug nel suo intervento  ha continuato a fornire dati sugli ultimi attacchi. In particolare ha parlato degli eventi più vicini in ordini di tempo, riferendosi soprattutto alla giornata del 2 ottobre, quando le forze militari ibrido-Russe hanno attaccato le posizioni dell’esercito Ucraino 14 volte in 24 ore. Queste ultime hanno infatti aderito al cessate il fuoco nella zona di Donetsk, riversandosi però, con l’utilizzo di granate nei pressi del villaggio di Zaitseve, mettendo in grave pericolo numerosi civili.

In merito alla questione civili si è poi espresso riportando dati, “positivi”, se comparati con quelli degli ultimi mesi. Attraverso i monitoraggi, è stato possibile sapere che nell’ultimo mese il numero dei civili coinvolti nel conflitto è pari a 15, tra morti e feriti, ma rappresentano addirittura il 62% in meno rispetto ai mesi precedenti.

Alexander Hug, ha concluso il suo intervento citando chi realmente si trova nelle posizioni di potere in questo conflitto, chi potrebbe decidere di farlo cessare. “ Le persone che si trovano da entrambi i lati della linea di confine non aspettano altro che le figure in posizioni di potere facciano cessare il fuoco”, e continua “ Le persone armate, ma soprattutto chi li comanda, si stanno forse dimenticando di una cosa; i civili coinvolti, ed i 500, non armati, inviati dall’OSCE, vengono da 44 paesi differenti, ed hanno un solo obiettivo; la pace” .

EU prolongs sanctions over actions against Ukraine's territorial integrity until 15 September 2017

The Council prolonged the restrictive measures over actions undermining or threatening the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Ukraine for a further six months, until 15 September 2017. The measures consist of asset freezes and a travel bans, which now apply to 150 persons and 37 entities. In response to the crisis in Ukraine are also in place other EU measures including economic sanctions targeting specific sectors of the Russian economy.

No obstacles to Kiev-Tehran strategic ties

Ukraine’s ambassador to Iran underlined his country’s willingness to enhance bilateral collaborations with the Islamic Republic, stressing that there are no barriers to establishment of bilateral strategic ties. Kiev attaches significance to its ties with Tehran, stressing that no third party can affect the relations: “We are ready to welcome Iranian officials at any level in Ukraine”, he stated. Last month, Iran’s ambassador to Ukraine also highlighted the ample opportunities available for enhanced cooperation between the two countries. The envoy further highlighted his country’s capacities in different fields as ship-building and aerospace industries and said Ukraine can help Iran in aerospace industries while the Islamic Republic can guarantee Ukraine’s energy security.  (In March 2016, Tehran and Kiev inked a memorandum of understating for the expansion of economic cooperation in various fields).

Russian FM has stated the possibility of "new tragedies" in case U.S. supply lethal aid to Ukraine

Russian Foreign Ministry has stated the possibility of “new tragedies” in case Washington moves to supply lethal aid to Ukraine. “The U.S. Congress demands that the deliveries of the so-called lethal aid [to Ukraine] start, therefore it is important that the White House and the State Department realize that this could result in new tragedies, and feel the responsibility” said Ryabkov. According to him, the Russian Foreign Ministry will contribute to Washington’s “adequate perception” of what is happening in Donbas.

Two soldiers of the 54th separate mechanized brigade were killed at the SvitlodarskaDuha bulge in the Anti-Terrorist Operation zone in Donbas on Tuesday. (ATO) press officer Leonid Matiukhin said that Russia-backed militants shelled the Ukrainian positions near Butivka coal mine in Donbas. “A symbolic construction of the mine fell down – a place where the elevator is located. They opened fire from a tank and now this construction collapsed. There were no casualties among our troops. The flag is also undamaged. The guys said they would fly this flag in Donetsk one day”, he said.

 

NATO Secretary Stoltenberg reiterated support for Ukraine

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg reiterated support for Ukraine, an UNIAN correspondent in Brussels reported from a press conference at the start of the meetings of NATO Defense Ministers Wednesday. He recalled that Ukrainian Prime Minister Volodymyr Groysman had visited NATO last week where the two officials had a meeting. Stoltenberg added that he had regular meetings with President Poroshenko and other representatives of the Ukrainian leadership. “So we will continue to work, we will continue to provide support, and also many NATO Allies provide support on a bilateral level, so we will continue to support Ukraine” Jens Stoltenberg said.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg announces four robust multinational battle groups will be deployed on the Alliance’s eastern flank in June in response to Russia’s aggressive actions against Ukraine, according to an UNIAN correspondent in Brussels. “We discussed the progress of the deployment and I expect all four battalions to be fully operational by June” Stoltenberg said. He also expressed confidence that the United States would stay committed to NATO, to the transatlantic bond but also to the sovereignty and the territorial integrity of all European states including Ukraine.

There is a looming state of emergency in Ukraine’s energy sector, as anthracite stocks in the warehouses of Ukrainian thermal power plants are enough for 40 days of work, according to the operator of the Ukrainian power grids, state-run national energy company Ukrenergo. The introduction of the state of emergency in the energy sector foresees that the power grids will operate with minimum workload of thermal power plants, which consume anthracite coal, being a deficit type of coal after the war in Donbass, a major supplier, broke out.

Russian drone downed in ATO zone in Donbass

The Ukrainian forces in eastern Ukraine report they have shot down a Russian unmanned aerial vehicle (a drone) in the zone of the Anti-Terrorist Operation near the demarcation line. “At about 19:00 February 8 an unmanned aerial vehicle was spotted in the sky close to the contact line. After the identification of the object, having received confirmation that the flying object does not belong to the ATO forces or international organizations that monitor the situation near the contact line with their unmanned aerial fleet, it was decided to destroy it,” the press center of the ATO Headquarters wrote on Facebook on Thursday, February 9.

211 servicemen of the Ukrainian Armed Forces died in 2016

“This year alone, 211 servicemen of the Ukrainian Armed Forces sacrificed their lives for peace and freedom of our country, defending Ukraine from the adversary”, Poroshenko said when delivering a speech in Mariupol. Poroshenko went on saying that despite a slight decrease in fire intensity on the part of Kyiv’s adversary, “the silence agreed upon in Minsk failed to materialize”.
