WTO boss hails Japan for TPP determination, leadership

The chief of the World Trade Organization has heaped praise on Japan for its leadership role in forging ahead with the Trans-Pacific Partnership even after the United States quit the free trade pact. “Any movement that goes in the direction of trade liberalization or the reduction of distortions in global trade is a good movement, and I’m supportive of that”, Roberto Azevedo said in an exclusive interview with The Asahi Shimbun in Tokyo on May 22. “If Japan were not doing anything, I doubt that this initiative would still be moving forward”, the director-general of the WTO stated. “I think there are not many countries in the world that can lead, that can drive forces, that can mobilize forces in the direction that we need at this point in time. Japan is one of those countries”.

 

First International Conference of the Kurds in Tokyo.

The media announced on 1st of May, decisions being made for the first international conference of Kurds in the Japanese capital, Tokyo. The conference confirmed the decisions, with the participation of a number of Kurdish political figures from the four parts of Kurdistan, along with Japanese politicians, which is :

– In order not to diminish the role of the forces fighting against Daesh and other terrorist groups, a no-fly zone should be declared in Rouge-Ava; Western Kurdistan.

– The need to recognize the project of Federal Northern Syria, which will serve to solve the Syrian crisis.

– In the South, the people will decide their destiny through the referendum.

– Stop the arrests of members of the Kurdish political movement in northern Kurdistan, by the government of the Justice and Development Party.

– Japan must assume its responsibilities, so that the AKP will return from its policies against the Kurdish movement and solve the Kurdish issue through democratic political methods.

– The Japanese government should provide assistance to the four parts of Kurdistan.

– Because of the political risks in Turkey, the Kurdish issue turned its attention to Japan to resolve this issue.

 

US Secretary of State Tillerson calls for “new approach” to North Korea

US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said on Thursday the escalating threat from North Korea’s nuclear program showed a clear need for a “new approach”, although he stopped short of detailing what steps the Trump administration would pursue. Tillerson was speaking at a news conference following talks with Japanese Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida in Tokyo, the start of his first trip to Asia as secretary of state. It was the first time Tillerson, a former oil executive with no prior diplomatic experience, had taken questions from the media since coming into office in early February.

King Salman arrives in Japan, the visit aims to strengthen relations with the Kingdom

Today King Salman arrived in Japan, the fourth country of his tour in Asia which started on February 26, and he was received at Haneda International Airport in Tokyo by Crown Prince Nahurito of Japan, Saudi Ambassador to Japan Al-Barrak and officials of the saudi embassy. His tour is the first by a Saudi king since 1971 when King Faisal visited Japan. During the visit Japan aims to strengthen relations with the Kingdom, which is Japan’s largest provider of oil exports, and to try to diversify its economy, including ways to increase japanese investments in non-energy sectors. Moreover the discussion will also focus on bilateral and regional issues, conflicts in the Middle East, Saudi.Japanese cooperation and commercial partnership, with a special reference to Saudi Aramco IPO.
