Boko Haram strikes again, sacks army battalion, kills Nigerian soldiers, seizes arms

Nigerian troops fighting the extremist Boko Haram sect have suffered major setbacks, the terror group killed eight soldiers and wounded 11 others in two separate attacks. The army formations involved in the incidents also lost several arms and ammunition. The first incident, in Borno State, occurred when over 200 Boko Haram terrorists on motorcycles suddenly descended on the military base. The terrorist, had five gun trucks and artillery guns, The Nigerian troops fought back, but were dislodged from their location after about an hour of fierce battle. Five soldiers were killed in action while nine others were seriously injured. Four other soldiers are yet to be found. The army is currently lamenting the loss of their equipment, arms and ammunition in the incident, the terrorists also carted away 16 AK47 rifles, one HF radio, two rocket-propelled grenades, two 60MM mortals and all the reserved ammunition and drugs in the base.

The International Monetary Fund: Nigeria to grow by 0.8% in 2017

The International Monetary Fund forecast 2.6 percent growth in sub-Saharan Africa this year: “Growth is projected to rise to 2.6 percent in 2017 and 3.5 percent in 2018, largely driven by specific factors in the largest economies, which faced challenging macroeconomic conditions in 2016”, the IMF said its latest World Economic Outlook report. Nigeria, the continent’s most populous nation and a leading oil producer, was expected to return to growth in 2017 after a challenging 2016 characterised by recession, a dip in oil prices and energy shortages. “Output in Nigeria is projected to grow by 0.8 percent in 2017 as a result of a recovery in oil production”, said the report, also citing sustained growth in the agricultural sector. Many of non-resource intensive countries will find it increasingly hard to sustain growth through higher public capital spending with a rising public debt, double digit inflation was forecast in several countries, including Nigeria, Angola and Ghana.

The Nigerian Centre for Disease Control, NCDC, raised an alarm over the outbreak of Cerebro Spinal Meningitis across north-western Nigeria. The first case of the disease was reported in Zamfara State in November, 2016, by then the disease had become an epidemic affecting six states in the northern part of the country. Since the outbreak, about 489 people are believed to have died of the disease with about 4,637 suspected cases reported across the country. Meningitis has occurred in different parts of the world but the highest incidence of the disease is found in the ‘meningitis belt’ of sub-Saharan Africa including Senegal, Gambia, Guinea Bissau, Nigeria, Niger, Chad, more commonly seen during the dry season. In this meningitis belt, the Type A strain of the bacteria was most common, however, it is the unusual Type C strain of the bacteria that Nigeria is currently battling with, which does not even mean that type A has been eliminated totally. Procuring vaccinations and drugs to contain the spread of the deadly disease became a major concern for international health agencies, the federal government, state governments, local governments and concerned individuals across the globe.

Some suspected cult members also launched an attack on Friday at Olunlade area of Ilorin where an unidentified man was killed.

Boko Haram: Trump moves to sell N184 billion fighter aircraft to Nigeria

President Donald Trump’s administration plans to sell a dozen aircraft to Nigeria’s air force for the fight against the extremist group Boko Haram: the deal could be worth $600 million. Former President Barack Obama’s administration originally agreed on the sale, but delayed it after incidents including the Nigerian Air Force’s bombing a refugee camp in January that killed 90 to 170 civilians. Formal notification of the deal has not yet been sent to Congress but it will soon be. A senior Nigerian military source in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital, confirmed that the sale would go ahead and said it would also involve training, surveillance and military intelligence “to support the ongoing insurgency war”. There are questions about whether Nigeria will be able to pay the full $600 million for the aircraft, equipment, training and support. U.S. officials said Buhari raised frustration with delays in the sale in a phone call with Trump in February.

How Nigerian churches are encouraging corruption – Obasanjo.

Olusegun Obasanjo, former Nigerian president, has said at the convention of Victory Life Bible Church International, that the church activities are contribuiting to cases of corruption. Mr Obasanjo, in a speech intitled “the role of the Church in the fight against corruption in Nigeria”, said: “If the Church, as an institution, does not take bribe or get involved in other corrupt practice, the behaviour of some of our men of God leaves much to be desired”. In the speech he accused those man who not only accept gifts offred from anybody ( giving the impression that anything is acceptable) but also venerate every sources of wealth, claiming that now is time to stand up against corruption. Mr Obansajo was president between 1999 and 2007, took a bold step to burb corruption durign his administration, saying that fighting corruption was a priority for him. He furter said that the discovery of oil and natural gas were two events that increased corrupt practices in the country.

Borno records 3,800 new cases of HIV in IDPs camps

3,8000 new infections oh HIV has been recorded in Borno State, all in a Displaced Persons camp. Currently 2.4 per cent of the population of the state (about 108,000 persons) are living with HIV and AIDS, and these new 3,8000 cases has been reginstrated from January to March, amongst them 70 children have been tested positive. Borno state has not participated in any HIV programme in the last two years, only tiny portion of the people living with HIV and AIDs can access treatment because most anti-retroviral centres have closed: in the state only 32 out of 90 centres are still operational. Within the last six years the state achieved only a nine per cent HIV reductio in Borno state, that’s because the government didn’t give priority attention to the plight of these persons. Governor Shettima had approved N45 million funding for HIV development programmes since December 2016, but the fund is yet to be released.

Nigeria seeks UN’s help to demine ex-Boko Haram enclave.

The Chief of Army Staff Tukur Buratai, has called United Nations assistance to remove mines from Sambisa forrest, an effort which will require much resources that the country alone may not be able to finance. The Army is doing a demining in the forest so that the troops can move around for operations, but it will require much more resources and efforts, and even civilian may be requested to demining support. The three affested states in the Nort East part (Yobe and Adamawa) are now almost 100 per cent free of insurgent, except Borno, but some terrorists are still belived to be hiding in remotes areas. Mr. Buratai said what was needed now was massive deployment of police and civil defence personnel in major towns and communities where people had returned to.

Boko Haram fighter killed by troops of 112 Task Force Battalion durign the Operation Lafiya Yole

A Boko Haram gunman was killed Wednesday in a Village in Borno State. The spokesman of the Nigeria army, Sani Usman, said the attack was repelled by troops of 112 Task Force Battalion durign the Operation Lafiya Yole. The attack occurred when the troops were carrying out a fighting patrol towards Boskoro, Dikwa Local Government Area of Borno State where it was believed, a sleeper cell of Boko Haram terrorists was hibernating. “While advancing, the troops came in contact with some elements of the terrorists suspected to be in staging area to lay ambush for troops along Ajiri-Dikwa road”, said Mr. Usman. The patrol team engaged the terrorists and neutralized one of them, unfortunately one soldier sustained injury during the operation. The gallant soldier has been evacuated to military hospital and he is responding to treatment.
