Iran thanks China for readiness to mediate in Saudi dispute

Iran’s embassy in Beijing commended the Chinese government for its preparedness to mediate between Tehran and Riyadh, saying Iran has not still given up the hope that Saudis would realize the need for détente with the neighbors and contribute to regional security and stability.In a statement released on Friday, Iran’s embassy in Beijing welcomed China’s readiness to play a constructive role in the Middle East region. China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi said he hopes Saudi Arabia and Iran can resolve their differences through “equal and friendly consultations”, adding, “China is friends with both Saudi Arabia and Iran. If there is a need, China is willing to play our necessary role”.

Top Eu officials to attend counter terrorism dialogue In Beirut

EU Counter-Terrorism Coordinator Gilles de Kerchove will visit Lebanon on March 1 and 2 to attend a high level meeting on the National Counter Terrorism Strategy, which is jointly organized by the Lebanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the European Union. De Kerchove will be accompanied by experts in counter-terrorism from the EU, EU Member States, and CEPOL (European agency for law enforcement training), said a statement issued by the Delegation of the European Union to Lebanon. The high level meeting on the National Counter-Terrorism Strategy will be co-chaired by De Kerchove and Director of Political and Consular Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Charbel Wehbi. The EU experts and representatives of the relevant Lebanese ministries and security agencies will attend the meeting. The EU officials’ discussions with the Lebanese authorities and security agencies will focus on “developing a national strategy on counter-terrorism”, the statement said. They will also address better ways to strengthen coordination between concerned stakeholders to tackle this challenge affecting peace and stability in Lebanon, the Middle East region and Europe.

 

Foreign Minister Çavuşoğlu: “Turkey needs special forces troops for Raqqa”

The strategic hills overlooking the northern Syrian town of al-Bab were captured by the Turkey-backed Free Syrian Army (FSA), clashes have resumed for the town’s full control, the Turkish military said in a statement on Wednesday. Speaking at a press conference in capital Ankara, Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım said that the FSA have surrounded Al-Bab on all sides and clashes resume for full control of town. He added that coordination with U.S.-led coalition and Russia prevents possible clashes with Assad forces as their troops move closer to al-Bab from southeast. Meanwhile, Foreign Minister Çavuşoğlu said yesterday that Turkey and other regional powers should provide special forces troops for the eventual assault on Daesh’s Syrian stronghold, the city of Raqqa.
