“Future” parliamentary bloc member MP Amine Wehbe stressed on Tuesday that his bloc is open to all suggested electoral draft laws provided they improve representation among the Lebanese, rejecting “all formulas which are related to the Orthodox draft because they threaten coexistence and subject Christians to danger”. Wehbe told “Voice of Lebanon” radio that “Future” movement has refused full proportionality amid the presence of arms, noting that they support the hybrid law. The lawmaker noted that despite all political forces’ efforts they couldn’t reach agreement on an electoral law; however, he expressed “optimism over the coming few days”

Aoun: seek overall economic plan that would improve country's situation

President of the Republic, General Michel Aoun, said on Thursday that he was still betting on the Lebanese people to work together to fight corruption and the squandering of public money in public administrations. General Aoun pledged to keep his promises and implement the content of his inauguration speech and the message of independence, despite the internal and external crises affecting the work of institutions and State networks. He then indicated that he was working in cooperation with the government and the relevant authorities to implement a comprehensive economic plan that would establish a healthy economy and gradually improve the situation in Lebanon.

MP Ibrahim Kanaan: campaign of lies and rumors arose to cheat people out of their rights

MP Ibrahim Kanaan told Voice of Lebanon radio on Sunday that the clamor that surrounded wage scale discussions aimed at demonizing the file in order to destabilize the entire issue. The MP confirmed that the report of the committee pinpointed the costs and reforms required, and that none of the parliamentary blocs objected to it. However, a campaign of lies and rumors arose to cheat people out of their rights. Kanaan attributed these lies to attempts by some at electoral gains.

Maronite Patriarch Rahi calls for end to corruption and clientelism

Maronite Patriarch, Cardinal BesharaRahi, held a mass on Sunday at the Church of Saint Joseph-Ayntoura in celebration of Saint Joseph, whereby he urged officials to put a halt to corruption, bribery and clientelism. The mass was attended by Apostolic Nuncio, Gabriele Caccia, and a host of current and former ministers and deputies, among other personalities. “We call on the political group and officials in the public domain to lead the state and public administrations out of partisan, political and sectarian subordination, so that loyalty to a ‘leader’ could be replaced with loyalty to the country and the interest of citizens”, said the Patriarch.

Khatib: We won't agree on any electoral law resembles the 60's

Environment Minister Tarek Al-Khatib said on Saturday “the 60’s law is very bad and all political parties reject it”, adding “we won’t accept a last moment 60’s- like electoral law”. Khatib told “Free Lebanon” radio that his party aims to accomplish a law that secures fair representation. Commenting on the salary scale issue, Khatib said that the main problem is the shortage in the budget and the need to secure the citizens’ rights, adding that this needs a complete basket of reforms.

 

Nasrallah says UN a weak organization, calls for fair taxes and proportional law.

Secretary General of Hezbollah, Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, said on Saturday during an event celebrating the birth of Fatima Al Zahra the daughter of Prophet Mohammad, that the United Nations is a weak organization and cannot be relied on to support rightful causes.  Nasrallah addressed gatherers through a screen in a speech which also touched on the political and economic situations in Lebanon. He hailed all women who continued to rise to the level of responsibility required of them during these difficult times in Lebanon and other countries, namely Palestine, Syria, Iraq, Yemen, Bahrain, Iran, Nigeria and Afghanistan

ISF thwarts abduction attempt in Bikfaya

The Internal Security Forces and a patrol of the Intelligence branch have managed to foil an attempt to kidnap a Syrian national on Bhersaf-Bikfaya highway, according to a statement issued by the ISF.  A Lebanese man was arrested and his pistol and car were confiscated. The inmate admitted to having planned this operation.  Meanwhile, work is underway to arrest the other people involved in this case.

Geagea, Girard tackle refugee affairs

Lebanese Forces leader Samir Geagea met on Monday in Meerab with the Representative for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Lebanon Mireille Girard, accompanied by her Lebanese affairs’ Advisor, Dominique Tohme, with talks reportedly touching on the current situation of Syrian displaced people in Lebanon and the need to assist them pending their safe return to their homeland. Talks also touched on UNHCR’s assistance in support of the infrastructure of Lebanon as a country hosting at home about a million and a half Syrian refugees.

Hariri asks Bassil to inform UNSC about Israeli threats.

The President of the Council of Ministers Saad Hariri chaired this afternoon at the Grand Serail a meeting of the Council of ministers, a statement by the Prime Minister’s office indicated on Monday.  Although the session was dedicated to the discussion of the draft budget, Prime Minister Hariri said at the beginning of the meeting: “The repeated threats by officials in the Israeli government, and in the media, against the civilians in Lebanon and their legitimate institutions and infrastructure aim at covering up Israel’s constant violations of UN Security Council Resolution 1701, while Lebanon abides by it and calls for its full implementation”. He added: “I ask the Foreign minister (Gebran Bassil) to prepare a list of these Israeli official stances announced in the media, and prepare a detailed letter about them to the UN Security Council so that the international community shoulders its responsibility in facing this deliberate tautening and this unconcealed threat to regional stability”.
