Five Niger soldiers killed by heavily armed motorbikers

Heavily armed gunmen riding motor bikes and other vehicles raided a village and killed five soldiers in Niger near the border with Mali early on Tuesday, the Interior Ministry said, amid signs of a growing Islamist insurgency in the region. Dozens of attackers entered Banigabou, about 20 km (12 miles) from the frontier before dawn – gunshots rang out for two hours, said residents. The ministry did not name the raiders, though Islamist militants based in Mali’s desert north have been pushing south toward its capital and over borders in the fragile Sahel region into Niger and Burkina Faso.

Bomb explosion kills 2 and injures 8 soldiers

At least two soldiers are feared dead after a bomb explosion along Banki – Usmanari – Kumshe road in Borno State. About eight soldiers of the 152 TF Battalion of the Nigerian Army were also injured in the explosion which occurred at about 8:10 a.m. One canter truck was destroyed in the explosion while the injured persons are currently receiving first aid treatment before they are evacuated by air to the hospital.

Boko Haram’s attack repelled by Nigeria Air Force and Nigerian Army Officials

On Monday night, one Nigerian soldier was confirmed dead after a Boko Haram attack. Thirteen of the insurgents were also killed after the attackers were repelled, the army said. Three other soldiers were injured in the attack on ground troops at Kangarwa Village in northern Borno State. The attack was repelled by a combination of Nigeria Air Force aircraft and Nigerian Army officials.

Gunmen attack in mining site kills over 40 people

The Police in Zamfara said several people were killed by gunmen suspected to be cattle rustlers at a mining site in Gidan Ardo Village of Bindin district of Maru Local Government Area. Witnesses in the area said the gunmen numbering over 70 rode into the mining site at around 3 p.m. on Monday and shot anyone on sight, killing over 40 persons and injuring several others. The gunmen were said to have carted away most of the mineral finds and also killed some of those that were in the mining pit.

A peacekeeper from Togo and two Malian civilians were killed Sunday in an attack on a military convoy in Mali, rounding off a bloody week for foreign forces stationed there, a UN statement said. Seven other peacekeepers, also from Togo, were wounded in the attack in the central Mopti region, according to the statement by the UN mission, known by the acronym MINUSMA. After a mine or improvised explosive device was detonated, attackers opened fire on the convoy, the UN said, without identifying the assailants.

Boko Haram jihadists killed two soldiers and razed a village adjoining the northeast Nigerian town of Chibok where the group kidnapped more than 200 schoolgirls two years ago, residents said Sunday. “Boko Haram gunmen attacked the village around 19:30. They fired indiscriminately and hurled explosives,” resident Bitrus John told AFP. “They killed two soldiers and injured another one in gunfight,” he said. Troops patrolling the area engaged the Islamists in a shootout, allowing residents to flee the village unhurt, said John.

UK wants to resume the sospended program of training militants in Syria

UK Defense Secretary Michael Fallon announced the decision of resuming suspended program of training militants in Syria. “All volunteers from the moderate opposition will be subject to strict vetting procedures and will receive training in international humanitarian law. Trainees will be security and medically screened prior to the start of training and will be assessed during and monitored after training,” Fallon told reporters. The training is reported to include basic infantry drills and battlefield medicine, as well as skills to avoid mines and booby-traps, according to the text of the upcoming announcement. The program was put on hold in 2015, after it became known that very few of the militants trained in Turkey by Western instructors succeeded in their mission, having either been killed by ISIL or al-Nusra Front (also known as Fatah al-Sham Front) militants, or surrendering, along with all of their brand-new US-supplied weapons and communications gear.
