Trump on Mideast peace: 'We will get it done'

Despite bleak prospects for success, President Donald Trump promised on Wednesday “to do whatever is necessary” to forge an Israeli-Palestinian peace deal. At a White House meeting with Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas, Trump pledged to reinvigorate the stalled Mideast peace process that has bedeviled his predecessors and said he would serve as “a mediator, an arbitrator or a facilitator” between the two sides. “We will get it done”, Trump confidently told Abbas. The source of Trump’s optimism was not immediately apparent. He offered no details about his effort or how it would be any different from attempts over the past two decades during which former Presidents Bill Clinton, George W. Bush and Barack Obama all tried and failed. Palestinian officials said after the meeting that Trump had not raised any specific proposals to restart negotiations.

This statement derives from the fact that according to Israel there are valid elements to show that the are responsible for serious terroristic acts against Israel. According to Abbas this is an Israel attempt to obstruct and sabotage U.S. efforts” to relaunch peace talks. He said it is a “fundamental violation” of the 1993 Oslo Accords and called on “all countries of the world to reject this declaration to preserve the agreement”. Earlier Thursday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met with Greenblatt for a second time this week to try to reach an agreement on the Judea and Samaria settlement enterprise, one of the most contentious issues in decades-old peace efforts. Netanyahu also said that Israel and the USA made progress on the issue of Israeli settlement construction.

Lebanese Hezbollah said on Thursday the outcome of U.S. President Donald Trump’s meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had effectively signaled an end to peaceful negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians. “After what came out after the meeting between Netanyahu and Trump, I am not exaggerating if I say that yesterday there was a semi-official announcement of the death of the path of negotiations”, Hezbollah leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah said in a live televised speech. Trump on Wednesday dropped a U.S. commitment to a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Washington’s longstanding policy on the Middle East. “For the Israelis, there is no such thing as a Palestinian state” Nasrallah said, adding that the two-state solution was the only thing keeping the door to negotiations open.

Pakistan has criticised UN Security Council’s inaction to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, which it deems essential for peace and stability in the Middle East. Speaking in the General Assembly in the debate on “The Question of Palestine”, Pakistan’s Ambassador to the United Nations, Maleeha Lodhi said that inaction by the Security Council has not only undermined its own credibility but has also weakened the ideals that the organisation espouses. These, she said, includes ideals of human dignity, of peaceful coexistence based on sovereign equality of all nations and of the right to self-determination of all people.
