Trump has set the war against Islamic State militants as a top priority

Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi will receive a phone call from United States President Donald Trump on Thursday evening as per a request from the latter. This would be the first phone call Trump makes with Abadi since he assumed U.S. presidency on January 20th. Alsumaria News quoted “an informed political source” a saying that the call will tackle political and security developments in Iraq and the Middle East, but did not mention specifics, like the muslism ban. Trump has set the war against Islamic State militants as a top priority for his administration and during a precedent call on 18th january Trump pledged support for Iraq and invited the Iraqi premier to visit the United States.

Seventy percent of east Mosul freed from Islamic State

“Roughly 65-70 percent of the eastern side has been liberated,” said Lieutenant General Talib Shaghati, who is also head of the elite Counter-Terrorism Service (CTS) spearheading the campaign to retake the northern city. “I think in the coming few days we will see the full liberation of the eastern side” he added. The western half of the city remains under the full control of Islamic State. The presence of large numbers of civilians on the battlefield has restricted Iraqi forces’ use of artillery but the cooperation of residents has also helped them targeting the militants. Iraqi officials expressed hope that residents would rise up against Islamic State, accelerating the group’s demise in the city. But mass executions seem to have discouraged widespread resistance.“Daesh (Islamic State) devised many plans to obstruct and block us but they failed. We were able to surpass them and these areas were liberated with high speed,” Shaghati said.

3 months to rout Islamic State

The Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi have said on Tuesday it would take three more months to rout Islamic State, as U.S.-backed forces battle to dislodge the militants from the stronghold of Mosul.“The Americans were very pessimistic. They used to talk about a really long period but the remarkable successes achieved by our brave and heroic fighters reduced that. I foresee that in Iraq it will take three months.” More than two months into the operation, elite Iraqi soldiers have retaken a quarter of Mosul. Besides Mosul, Islamic State still controls the towns of Tel Afar and Qaim as well as Hawija and the surrounding area. The fall of Mosul would probably end Islamic State’s ambition for a self-styled caliphate, but the fighters could still mount a more traditional insurgency in Iraq, and plot or inspire attacks on the West.

Meeting between the Syrian, Turkish and Russian Ministers

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu says a cease-fire in Syria should not cover terrorist groups like the Islamic State group and the Fatah al-Sham Front, as well as Lebanon’s Hezbollah which fights on the government side. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, who chaired Tuesday’s talks, did not openly disagree with Cavusoglu. But he mentioned that some groups operating in Syria “were invited by the government of Bashar Assad,” implying that Hezbollah’s presence in Syria is as legitimate as Russia’s own role. The Iranian Minister said that Iran “respects” Turkey’s stance, but added that “other countries don’t accept” it.
