India refuses to be part of China's Belt-Road initiative

India’s External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Gopal Baglay said that “no country can accept a project that ignores its core concerns on sovereignty and territorial integrity”. India on Saturday refused to be a part of China’s One Belt One Road (OBOR) initiative citing its objections to the US$46 billion China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), that passes through Pakistan-administered Kashmir, the Statesman reported quoting IANS. Citing the CPEC that is being touted as a flagship part of OBOR, India’s External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Gopal Baglay said: “No country can accept a project that ignores its core concerns on sovereignty and territorial integrity”.

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has said the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) is a cornerstone of our own quest for regional connectivity and shared prosperity. Chairing a high-level meeting in Islamabad on Tuesday, the Premier emphasized that Pakistan believes in peaceful co-existence with all the countries of the region. The panel evaluated various policy options in response to different challenges in regard to foreign relations. The participants focused on issues pertaining to regional, external and internal security situation.

Russia’s nebulous public position on its growing ties with Pakistan continues to give sleepless nights to Indian policymakers who have sought to isolate Islamabad on the issue of terrorism. After it officially denied reports that it had shown any interest in China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), Moscow has not just declared strong support for the China-funded project but also announced its intention to link its own Eurasian Economic Union project with CPEC.
