A policeman killed, another wounded in western Baghdad bomb blast

A policeman was killed and another one was wounded when an explosive device exploded in an area west of Baghdad. The bomb was planted on the side of a road in Rafoush area, west of the capital, and went off when the police patrol was passing by, according to the sources. The United Nations Assistance Mission in Iraq (UNAMI) has said that violence in the country lef 1115 casualties, excluding security members, during March. Baghdad was the second most affected province with 84 deaths and 246 injuries, according to the organization’s monthly casualty count. It excludes death toll among security members after Iraqi authorities had asked to get such information exclusively from security commands.

Iraq keen to reach agreement with Iran on joint oil fields

Iraqi Oil Minister Jabbar Allaibi said on Sunday his country plans to reach an agreement with Iran on exploitation of the joint oil fields. He made the remarks during his speech at the Iraq Energy Forum 2017. The official said Baghdad is in serious talks with Tehran on joint use of oil fields in the two country’s borders. He called for improvement of relations with neighboring countries to diversify the country’s oil and gas revenues.

Iraqi diplomat: Baghdad ready to mediate between Iran and Saudi Arabia

Iraq’s Ambassador to Kuwait Alaa al-Hashimi said on Thursday that his country is ready to mediate between Iran and Saudi Arabia. Al-Hashemi made the remarks while speaking in an interview with the Kuwaiti newspaper Al-Jarida. Given its good relations with all regional countries, Iraq is ready to step in and help bring closer the views of Tehran and Riyadh, the ambassador said. He said that any measure by Iraq to help improve Iran-Saudi Arabia relations would not be a difficult one because there exists the required determination and good will on both sides.

Peshmerga not involved against Islamic State in western Mosul battles

Kurdistan’s army forces (Peshmerga) are not partaking in the Iraqi forces’ battle against Islamic State in western Mosul. JabbarYawar, secretary-general of the Peshmerga Ministry, told Bas News that the force maintains deployment at regions it had recaptured earlier from Islamic State militants. He added that no agreement had been made with the government in Baghdad regarding participation in western Mosul battles which, he said, are solely led by Iraqi forces contrariwise the operations in eastern Mosul which launched in October and ended with the retaking of the region late January.

Car bomb kills 45 people in southwestern Baghdad

An explosion occurred in southwestern Baghdad on Thursday killing 45 people and wounding another 56 second the CNN. The explosion was due to a car bomb which hit a busy car market in the predominately Shia district of al-Bayaa. Medical sources told Reuters that the death toll is expected to rise as the wounded are in critical condition while ISIS claimed the responsibility with an online statement.

 

USA coalition asked for NATO to become more involved in the ISIS fight

The Secretary-General of NATO Jens Stoltenberg have said on Wednesday, in Brussels, that the oraganization has started training Iraqi forces in the country as part of the anti-Islamic State coalition efforts against the militant group on the request of Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi. The training is “in addition to what we do in Jordan, where we also train Iraqi officers” and “Now we have started to train Iraqi officers in Iraq, which is taking place in and around Baghdad. It is a modest start, but it is a scalable activity and of course this is one of the ways that NATO helps and supports the efforts of counter-ISIL coalition” he have said. USA coalition has asked for NATO to become more involved in the ISIS fight in both Iraq and Syria.

One civilian killed and five others wounded by an explosion in Baghdad

A police source revealed that a civilian was killed and five others were wounded in the explosion of an improvised explosive device in southern Baghdad, reported Alsumaria on Wednesday. “Security forces arrived in the area of the incident and transferred the wounded to a nearby hospital and the body to the forensic medicine department,” the source added on condition of anonymity. Earlier today, a civilian was killed and three others were wounded by a mortar shell that fell on a house in al-Radwaniyah area, in western Baghdad.
