EU Urges Azerbaijan To Release Detained Opposition Figures

The European Union has urged Azerbaijan to release detained opposition figures, in an apparent reference to the alleged abduction and arrest of a journalist critical of Baku and the detention of an opposition politician. The statement on June 4 did not mention names but came after journalist Afqan Muxtarli was kidnapped in the Georgian capital, Tbilisi, on May 29 and the arrest of opposition politician Gozal Bayramli. The EU statement said “a review by Azerbaijan of any and all cases of incarceration related to the exercise of fundamental rights, including the freedom of expression, and immediate release [of] all of those concerned is urgent. “We expect that the due process of law is respected, as well as the civil and political rights of citizens and those residing legally in states other than their own”, it added. The EU also said it welcomed the Georgian government’s announcement that it would investigate the alleged kidnapping. Tbilisi denies it was involved in the case

Trump: Azerbaijan is valued partner of US

President of the United States of America Donald J. Trump has congratulated President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev, in a letter for the celebration of azeri Republic Day. “Azerbaijan is a valued partner of the United States. Together, we are working to enhance global security through our joint counterterrorism efforts. We stand with the people of Azerbaijan and are committed to strengthening our relationship through dialogue on security, economic cooperation, and democratic principles”, noted the US president. “The United States also strongly supports the peaceful resolution of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict”, said Trump.

 

Italy will continue to support intensifying ties between Azerbaijan, EU

Italy will continue to firmly support intensifying relations between Azerbaijan and the EU, Foreign Minister of Italy Angelino Alfano said in his letter addressed to his Azerbaijani counterpart Elmar Mammadyarov on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries, Azerbaijan’s Foreign Ministry said. Angelino Alfano underlined that during the past 25 years the two countries have established important cooperation especially in the economic field and that Italy gradually becoming the main trade partner of Azerbaijan. Mammadyarov instead, expressed his hope that Italy as member of the OSCE Troika starting from 2017, will make efforts for the soonest and just settlement of Armenia-Azerbaijan Nagorno-Karabakh conflict based on the norms and principles of international law.

 

France says supports signing of new Azerbaijan-EU agreement

France supports the enhancement of the relations between Azerbaijan and EU and the signing of a new strategic partnership agreement between the sides, said Florans Manjen, Director of Continental Europe Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Development of France. She made the remarks during a meeting with Azerbaijan’s Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov in Baku April 26, Azerbaijan’s Foreign Ministry said. Citing the successful cooperation in energy field between the two countries Minister Mammadyarov said that there are favorable opportunities in other areas for French companies as well. The minister put an emphasis on works related to TAP project, as well as North-South and East-West corridors and prospects of these projects.

World Bank says average annual inflation will fall to 5% in Azerbaijan

The average annual inflation will decline to 5% in Azerbaijan in 2017 due to limited liquidity on the market, the World Bank (WB) said in its updated “Azerbaijan Partnership Program Snapshot” report. The report added, “Azerbaijan’s economy is likely to experience another year of negative growth in 2017 despite the anticipated recovery of oil prices, as oil production is not expected to increase and the non-oil sector continues to be affected by the government’s spending cuts and the banking sector distress. Non-oil sector growth will also remain weak”.

Italy intends to take serious steps for development of cooperation with Azerbaijan in non-oil sector, said Italy’s Minister of Economic Development Calenda. He made the remarks during his meeting with Azerbaijan’s Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov. The Azerbaijani minister is on an official visit in Italy. Azerbaijan is an important economic partner of Italy, Italian companies operate successfully in Azerbaijan, particularly, in the energy sector, and it is necessary to take serious steps in order to continue this cooperation, said Calenda. Calenda and Mammadyarov finally noted the importance of the Southern Gas Corridor (SGC) for Italy in terms of providing additional gas volumes.

Recalling his visit to Belgium, President Ilham Aliyev noted the useful meetings and discussions held within this visit. Stressing that during this visit it was launched negotiations on a new agreement between EU and Azerbaijan, the head of state named it as an important step to develop bilateral cooperation even more, expressed hope the works would be continued actively and end in time.
