Abdullah: Peace with Taliban possible but their safe havens must be eliminated first

Afghanistan’s Chief Executive Dr. Abdullah Abdullah has said, in a meeting with a delegation of the European Parlament, that peace is possible with the Taliban group but their safe havens must be eliminated first. He said there have been developments recently in Afghan peace process and reconciliation with Taliban is likely however their safe havens and training centers must be eliminated first. However the Afghan Government have successfully been fighting the terrorist groups. He also pointed towards the government’s efforts to bring reforms in the key sectors and said necessary reforms have been brought in the elections systems and efforts are underway for the upcoming elections.

President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani, who attended a ceremony held at Presidential palace on the occasion of 26th of Dalwa equals to withdraw of Russian troops from Afghanistan, insisted over the victory of Afghanistan and winning war against terrorism. He said that combating communists is the same as combating terrorists, and according to him Afghanistan will win this war as it won that war. He also invited Taliban into a peace and dialogue process because they can’t win this war. Ghani added that Russia after 28 governments is repeating the same mistake committed years ago, interfering in the Afghan affairs. 26th of dalwa is the day that Russian troops withdrew Afghanistan 28 years ago, they were defeated by the Mujahidin.

The UN refugee agency gives 400$ to refugees to send them back to Afghanistan

A human rights group has accused Pakistan of forcing hundreds of thousand afghan refugees back to their homeland. Human Rights Watch said that the UN refugee agency gives 400$ to refugees to convince them to return in Afghanistan. For Human Rights Watch this is a sort of bribe. “The exodus amounts to the world’s largest unlawful mass forced return of refugees in recent times,” the Human Rights Watch report said. In an interview Indrika Ratwatte, Pakistan’s country representative for the UN refugee agency, said there was police harassment and arrests of Afghan refugees in mid-2016, in a Pakistani province. Meanwhile Pakistan affirmed that it has had some problems to repatriate the refugees in relation to the insufficient security in these provinces.

The growing ties between Russia and Talibans are an interference in the Afghan affairs

Afghan politicians and the civil society critized the meeting held on 27 december in Moscow. According to them, this is an interference in the Afghan affairs and they are worried about the growing ties beetwen Russia and Talibans. They said that Russia should support the Afghan government and not funding and arming militants. Ayar, head of the United Afghanistan Party, criticized US and NATO troops for failure to eliminate terrorist groups in the over past 15 years, and he will not allow to turn Afghanistan into a ground for a proxy war. Also the Chairman of the National Peace Party Popal said that the foreign troops arrived in the country to achieve some objects, but these are unachieved. Politicians and civil activists released a declaration in which they pointed out that the relatioship beetwen Talibans, Pakistan and Russia is a clear sign of the support of the foreign countries to the rebel cause.

UAE’s high level officials were the targets of the deadly attack in Kandahar

“The deadly attack in Kandahar likely plotted outside the country and it targeted several high levels official including UAE Ambassador”, said the National Security Adviser of Afghanistan Atmar. In a press conference he added that this attack carried out with support of the enemy of the country. Taliban Group, despite carried out some terrorist attacks in the same day, rejected their involvment in this particular attack, to preserve the relationship with Islamic State close to the Afghan government. Abdul Raziq, the police provincial chief, said that this attacks were carried out by Haqqani with the support of Inter Service Intelligence (ISI), the spy wing of the Pakistani military.

Bombing attack in Kandahar killed 11 people and wounded 17 others

The United Arab Emirates say five of its diplomats died in a bombing attack in Afghanistan’s Kandahar that killed at least 11 people and wounded 17 others, including Juma al-Kaabi, the UAE ambassador to Afghanistan. The official Emirates news agency, WAM, said the officials were “on a mission to carry out humanitarian, educational and development projects”. The blast, which struck the provincial governor’s office during a visit by the UAE delegation, was one of a string of bombings that hit three Afghan cities on Tuesday, killing nearly 50 people and wounding 100. On the Afghan side, authorities said the dead included two politicians, a deputy governor from Kandahar and an Afghan diplomat stationed at its embassy in Washington. The diplomats were expected to open a number of UAE-backed projects as part of an aid program to Afghanistan. The Taliban denied carrying out the bombing, saying the attack was a result of “internal local rivalry”.

Tuesday’s two bombing attacks in Kabul killed 30 people and wounded 78 others

Officials revised the casualty toll after Tuesday’s deadly twin-bombings in Kabul and said 30 people had been killed and at least 78 wounded. The attack, which appeared coordinated, took place at around 4pm on Tuesday as a convoy of parliamentary staff was leaving the offices in Darulaman Road in PD6. According to reports a suicide bomber blew himself up first at the entrance to Parliament’s offices and then a suicide car bomber detonated his explosives.
Police immediately cordoned off the area and two hours after the attack ambulances could still be heard transporting the wounded to various hospitals in the city. Among the victims was the head of the NDS zone in the PD7 area who was reportedly killed while a female MP from Herat was among the wounded. No further details were released on the identities of the victims. The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack soon after the incident.

Afghan security forces captured Taliban’s key base

During the Afghan security forces operation in Khashrood district of Nemroz province Taliban’s key base was captured, 6 armed Taliban killed and 18 others were wounded. Col. Mohammad Salih Masoud security in-charge of Nemroz told BNA that the operation was launched three days ago to retake the captured area by Taliban in Nemroz province so far Razi and Kandahari regions of the district were captured by Afghan security forces. He added that during the operation 6 armed insurgents were killed, 18 wounded and their key base was captured by Afghan security forces. Also security in-charge of the province said in the mentioned operation a mine making plant including 20 bags of explosives, 20 barrels mines a bicycle attached full of explosives were destroyed. Also a national army soldier was martyred in mine blast during the operation.

NATO deploys 200 soldiers in Afghanistan's Farah

Around 200 NATO soldiers, mainly Italians, have been deployed to Afghanistan’s volatile western province of Farah, officials confirmed, after attempts by Taliban fighters in recent months to overrun its capital city.The announcement on Sunday came two days after the Pentagon said it would deploy some 300 US Marines to the southern province of Helmand, where American forces engaged in heated combat until their mission ended in 2014.The troops will mainly train and advise local forces, NATO officials say, but the deployments underscore how foreign forces are increasingly being drawn back into Afghanistan’s conflict.

Afghanistan’s President and CEO called on all Afghans to comply with the provisions of the nation’s constitution

President Ashraf Ghani and CEO Abdullah Abdullah on Thursday called on all Afghans to comply with the provisions of the nation’s constitution. The two officials had been speaking at a ceremony in Kabul to mark the 13th anniversary of the ratification of the Afghan constitution. Ghani also discussed the ongoing crisis that Afghans are currently facing and pledged to resolve issues in accordance with the laws of Afghanistan.
According to Ghani, his administration inherited major problems from the previous government, but vowed to resolve them with the help of the people. Ghani also called on government and non-government institutions to ensure the laws are implemented. In addition, Abdullah spoke on the implementation of the political agreement signed between the two officials during the establishment of the National Unity Government (NUG). He said, according to the NUG’s political accord, some amendments need to be considered in the constitution. Meanwhile he  highlighted the importance of the parliamentary system in Afghanistan he said  that new  proposals should not be interpreted as oppositions to the constitution. According to his position, constitutional amendment is one of the key items of the commitments made by the national unity government which is supposed to be discussed at a constitutional Loya Jirga.  The constitutional Loya Jirga stresses on the position of the chief executive or premiership and the issue is quite clear: a commission for the constitutional amendment was also agreed. Afghanistan currently has a centralized political system.
